Changing proxy and DNS server guide.
This is step by step to changing the NTL proxy and DNS servers. The guide is split into two parts. DNS and proxy.
DNS Servers
DNS is way of translating a name into an IP address. For example when you enter
www.hotmail.com into your browser your browser goes to 207.68.172.239 Every computer that is connected to the internet has an IP address. The DNS ( Domain Name System or Server) is simply a way to convert the name to an IP address. You would not be able to use the internet very easily if you had to remember IP address above instead of
www.hotmail.com ! Bellow is a list of DNS servers. If you are having problems getting to pages then changing your DNS server may help. A list of DNS servers is bellow :-
NTL - 194.168.4.100 / 194.168.8.100
BT - 194.73.73.172 / 194.73.73.173
FREESERVE - 194.152.64.34 / 194.152.64.68
There are many many more DNS servers out there and you do not have to use the above servers.
To change the DNS server on windows 95/98/ME :-

One of there will be TCP/IP followed by the name of the adaptor you are using. Example : TCP/IP Realtec Ethernet Adaptor. Double click on this entry and then click on the dns tab. Enter the DNS server of your choice into the two fields in this window. If the system prompts you for a hostname then enter “ computer “. When you click o.k. windows will warn you that the settings may affect DHCP. Click yes to accept the changes. Once this is done reboot your computer.

On the window that appears you will see two fields top and bottom. On the bottom field will be two windows that may be grayed out. Click to put the dot in the option “ Specify a DNS server “ and these boxes should be white and allow you to enter the server. When you have entered the server numbers click o.k. on all the boxes. There is normaly no need to reboot the computer.
PROXY SERVERS
A list of the current proxy servers can be found here :-

To change the proxy server in windows open your browser and click on tools then internet options. The click on the connections tab. You will see a button marked lan settings. Press this button a new window will appear. Enter the proxy server of your choice into this window. Ensure that you tick the button marked “ do not use this proxy for local connections “. Click o.k. on all the boxes so that you are back to the browser window.
Be aware that the NTL proxy servers may rely on NTL DNS servers to function. This as yet is not confirmed. If changing your DNS and PROXY servers does not work then it is worth trying to ping the site you want. If you can ping the site using its name then there is nothing wrong with your DNS settings. If you can ping the site but not access it via the web then try changing the proxy. If you are going to run any kind of connectivity test you must make sure that you disable any firewall software you have when testing as they can give false results. Ensure that you re-enable the firewall afterwards.
