Webspace folder with no index.htm problem
I used to have a folder on my ntl webspace called eg images. There was nothing in it but it was used so that a webcam could upload images whenever it detected motion.
I could view all the files in this folder while at work to make sure no one was in the house nicking all my valuable stuff. I could type in the address like this:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/username/images
and get a list of files in the folder whose filename includes the time the event was triggered eg
grab1002am.jpg
grab1345pm.jpg
Obviously, clicking on the filename would enable me to view the image.
I have noticed that in the last week I can no longer do this - get a 403 Forbidden "You do not have permission to access folder on this server". Tried it from work and at home - same thing.
Is this a change?
I can still access files in the folder but need to type in the full file name eg .../username/images/file.jpg but as I don't know at what time an image has been posted I can't do this as don't know what the filename will be.
Has anyone else got this problem? If so, is there a way round it?
Thanks.

Re: Webspace folder with no index.htm problem
The images are uploaded by the webcam software CoffeeCup through FTP. I can delete images using my FTP software Terrapin.
Its only the last week that I have been unable to view the contents of the folder.

Re: Webspace folder with no index.htm problem
Someone at NTL has disabled directory browsing on the web server. This is actually a good thing, as keeping directory browsing enabled makes things a *hell* of a lot easier for hackers.
If you want to see the images, why not just log into the site via FTP? You will still be able to browse the directory, and with a decent FTP client, it will be almost as simple as going to the site.

maybe seperate web servers with different configs, so might work for one persons account but not another.

Exactly, as do I - or at least I did until NTL disabled it.
Incase anyone's not tried calling NTL tech support recently, if you're thinking of calling them about this issue, don't. Why? Well, back in the good old days you'd get to talk to some nice helpful person in their Wales call centre - someone who actually knew what they were talking about [ok, so you'd occasionally get someone who wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I found that tended to be fairly rare ]. Now you get someone in 1 of those indian call centres who... what's the nicest way I can put this... makes me long for the good old days of NTL tech support.
I asked if it was possible to have the setting turned off for my account, at which point she put me on hold - after 6 minutes of listening to the hold music I hung up.

Re: Webspace folder with no index.htm problem
It appears to be a change made by ntl. I'm not too happy with it but at least I know now that it wasn't me doing something wrong.
I can ftp using IE and firefox from home but unfortunately at work our IT dept has blocked ftp so I can no longer keep an eye on my house while I'm at work.
Ah well.

Re: Webspace folder with no index.htm problem
Have you tried linking your images to a web page? I've done this at work as a sort of cheap security webcam, and toyed around with it at home. Works a treat.
Have a look at http://workshop.visiongs.de/ for some useful advice.

if you do not use your webspace for anything other than this, then just put the images into the main directory with no index or home file, and view it from there,
Or, have a html file that shows your images and rotates them or in a gallery fasion as long as your camera can save the images like 1.jpg, 2.jpg 3.jpg etc or pic1.jpg, pic2.jpg, pic3.jpg etc. i can give you the file.

If your talking about scripts that auto generate a directory listing, unfortunatly they won't work on NTL webspace as they will either rely on PHP or Perl/CGI, neither of which is supported on NTL webspace.
