Broadband email problem

I have been programming my new Windows XP Home PC before transferring the data etc from my current 98SE one, which it will replace.
When I test the new one, by connecting it to the 120 cable modem, in place of the old PC, it works fine - with one exception.

Internet Explorer works OK. In Outlook Express, I have set up several User accounts and a News account, by copying the details from the old PC. The news account downloads posts OK - but I cannot send or receive email at all. All attempts get the report -"SMTP Port 5001 Secure SSL No.1 Socket error 10061 Error number 0x800CCCOE". I haven't got far checking out the possibilities given for this on Google, as I am pretty dim.

However, I did notice that the new PC's IP address is different from the old PC (both start with a number in the eighties, and end with numbers below 100, - and I wonder whether the NTL system is confined to one IP address at a time, and I would have to register the new PC and lose the email function of the old one? (Seems strange that the News function is OK, in that case.)

Could anyone please enlighten me, as to whether I have a problem or not? I have spent several days on this so far.

Re: Broadband email problem

The error message seems to indicate that the settings are wrong.

Check in tools accounts that you have the following settings:
incoming mail server type: pop3
incoming mail server: pop.ntlworld.com
port: 110

outgoing mail server: smtp.ntlworld.com
port: 25

username: just the first part of your email address (eg excluding the @ntlworld.com part)

You do not need to use a secure connection, nor authentication for outgoing email.

hth.

Re: Broadband email problem

Thanks for advice, Chris. Sorry for delay.

The settings I used were copied over from my present PC, which works OK - but I have tried your ones, without success.

Think it is something to do with getting the modem to recognise the new PC's IP address - been trying switching them on and off.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time at the moment, but will swot up on it and persevere later. Meanwhile, thanks again.
