Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Had a quick look but can't see anything relevant.
I am trying to set up my VM/Ntl e-mail account on my new iPad. I did the same last week on a new smartphone ( Nokia Lumia800) without any problems, but after I have entered account name, e-mail address and password I get on screen message saying 'Cannot connect via SSL'
If I select the 'try without SSL' option it just sits there 'verifying' but gets no further.
Any suggestions most welcome.
Jim.

Are you using the correct port? 995 for pop and 993 for IMAP and also have SPA OFF

Bear with me, I am a United fan after all.
Correct port on what/where.
I have not got as far as any port settings, pop or smtp settings on the iPad. I can't get past the 'Verifying ' screen.
My VM settings have not altered for ages and worked fine for my new mobile.

Sorry I can't help you any more due to my fortunate circumstance of being a city fan
Bear with me and I'll see if I can find out more

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
I've been fortunate since 1957, and especially for the last 20 years or more.
Just checked my account settings in Outlook Express and I have POP on port 110, SMTP on 465 and SSL unticked.
I am guessing these are default settings but as they have alweays worked perfectly I have left well alone.

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
The port setting should be under the ADVANCED tab..
Not a mac person myself (apart from the hardware side) I'm sure though that someone will soon confirm if you have no luck

The pop port needs to be 995 with SSL on

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
I will try changing the port settings in Outlook Express, not much of a Mac fanboy myself either but needs must. A lot of the tech info I use for my work, fault codes etc is much easier to transport on a tablet than a laptop, plus I always like playing with new toys.
Jim.
PS, cannot get to the advanced settings for mail on the iPad yet, it must be in there somewhere. :-)

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Sadly already been to that page without success.
Tried altering my POP settings to no avail.
I got as far as entering both my POP and SMTP servers onto the iPad but still got the SSL warning.
When I then clicked to connect without it went to 'Verify' for a couple of minutes then flagged up that server dos not accept password authentication or something.
Will keep trying.

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
It took me ages to get it working on my iPad 2, my settings are as follows
IMAP Account Information

Address: My Email Address
Description: NTLWorld Email
Incoming Mail Server
Hostname: imap.virginmedia.com (ntlworld.com didn't work)
User Name: my email address in full
Password: My Password
Outgoing Mail Server
smtp.ntlworld.com
User Name: full email address again
Password: same as IMAP
Use SSL: On
Authentication: "Password"
Server Port: 465
Advanced->Incoming Settings
Use SSL: On
Authentication "Password"
Server Port: 993
Hope it helps

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Thanks for that Graham, I will give that a go. One question, if I use those settings will that have any effect on all of my other devices, laptop, mobile etc?
Jim.

Still no go,
Would you advise changing my Ntl e-mail account from POP to IMAP, I assume I will still be able to use the same password if I do so ?

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Nice choice on the Lumia!
Not an iOS person, but can't you set it up as if using a gmail account, after all that's basically what Virgin provide now? When I set up my ntlworld address on WP7 I did it as a gmail account type and it "just worked".

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
IMAP's handy if you want to be able to get emails from all your devices, rather than when using POP the email is downloaded to whichever POP device accesses it first. So for example you had Outlook Express open on your PC waiting for an email but you had to go out and so took your iPad/Phone with you. If you then checked for an email on those POP configured devices and it had already been sent, your PC would have picked it up first so it wouldn't be available to the mobile devices. IMAP's great if when out and about you get an email but you want to get it as well on your desktop when you get home.
I gave up trying to get my NTL email set up on my iPhone and iPad as like you say, it just sits there verifying. In the past, it has eventually got past this stage quickly, but right now it's on my desk in front of me verifying and was like that for 10 minutes or so, then threw up an error saying the POP server smtp.ntlworld.com is not responding and then configures itself for IMAP. I tried entering pop3.ntlworld.com into the incoming server box but again, it just sits there.
To save this constant messing around, I logged into my Virgin Media webmail, went into settings and then the forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Within there, clicked 'add a forwarding address' and entered a Gmail address I use for my iPhone and iPad. Then, just set up that Gmail address on the two devices. Problem solved - all my NTL email still goes to my PC and I can also check it while I'm out and about on my two devices without worrying about being able to connect to NTL's POP and SMTP servers to send and receive whilst on 3G.
I'm guessing within the POP/IMAP settings on the VM webmail you could probably change the account to IMAP and the iPad would probably be OK with that, but I personally don't want IMAP, so the Gmail option is perfect for me and is set up on the iDevices within moments.
Hope that helps

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Might give that a try. I used to have my account set to delete from server once downloaded but since the huge increase in storage I have changed it to 'Keep a copy on server' set to delete after 7 days. That gets round the problem of losing a message to my mobile that I want to look at on my PC.
I did try to alter my account by disabling my Ntl POP account and setting up an IMAP account but it rejected my password.
I have used the same Ntl account settings for almost 10 years on various PC's a Nokia N95, N900 and my new Lumia. All different operating systems and all logged on first time without any hassle.
After putting it of for years I may have to get myself a Gmail account.

Re: Set up VM/Ntl mail account on new iPad ?
Well the rather inelegant gmail option did the trick.
Many thanks to all who replied.
Jim.
