Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

What are the Server settings for Outlook Express using Virgin Media ?

I have recently transferred my Broadband/Email service from Orange to
Virgin Media and whilst I can access the Internet and receive Emails I cannot send any ? (I should add that my Email Address ends with freeserve.co.uk).

I am currently using Windows XP with Outlook Express 6.
The latter has the following settings :- (see Tools/Accounts/Properties)

Mail Account = 1stvirginmedia.com
Incoming Mail = pop3.virginmedia.com
Outgoing Mail = smtp.virginmedia.com

Are these correct ?

The Error Message I get is :-
The connection to the server has failed. Account: '1stvirginmedia.com', Server: 'smtp.virginmedia.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I also sometimes get a very quick Icon display (about 5 seconds) saying something about 'local area connection' followed by 'A Network cable has been unplugged' ... but I have no cable problems ?

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Many Thanks,
COLIN.

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

If I am right in thinking your mail account should be your virginmedia email address.

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

I don't think so Matthew ... its just a name you decide on to refer to Servers.

What I need to do is find a person that uses Outlool Express 6 to access their Virgin Media Emails (preferable with an Email that does not end with virginmedia.com) and ask them to click on Tools then Accounts then Properties then Servers and tell me what settings they have for Incoming and Outgoing Mail ?

Thanks,
COLIN

100% correct, how would he collect his email without the email address, think about what you're doing Colin.

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

Colin, you need to understand that Mail Account HAS to be YOUR email address.

If you set it to anything else how can it possibly be delivered to YOUR email address? Simply put, it can't do as you're telling it to send to 1stvirginmedia.com which isn't even an email address!

I hope you understand now? Look at what is in the ACCOUNT NAME box in the images below. I'm not sure what server settings if any need to be changed for your out going mail settings due to you using freeserve email but your account name should be your email address.

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

Snoopz

I have tried this and get the same error ... as I said before I think you are confusing my
Account Name (on Servers) which IS my Email Address with my Mail Account (on General)

COLIN

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

I'm sure someone with the knowledge of this problem will eventually have the answer.

Personally i would just open a gmail account or hotmail then you would never have problems like this when moving providers. The last time i used Freeserve was in my dialup days over 10 years ago!

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

ok...ill post the exact configuration you need for each page i understand what your meanign abotu the name of the server so dnt worry

once oyu have set it up as per my instructions ill need you to doa test adn report the error numbers those will be crucial to determine the fault as it windows inbuilt diagnostic errors which can help pinpoint the fault

edit: you will have to bear with me i will post it asa idiot guide so assumign you dnt knwo anyuthing but i am pretty sure you do but since i dnt knwo yoru exact it knowledge it easier to assume you know nothing and post it asas step by step guide so please dnt take offence

edit2:

ok first open outlook express
click on tools then select accounts
click on add and select mail
first page display name --> this is the name you want to be display when you send email for example joe bloggs then click next
on the next page this is for your email address --> for example if your email address is joebloggs@virginmedia.com then you put that, replace with your own email address then press next
on the next page this is the email settings --> so select pop3 (im assuming you are wanitng pop3 from your original post if nto select imap but ill need to give additonal details later) in incoming servr type pop3.virginmedia.com and outgoign server type smtp.virginmedia.com then press next
on the nxt page is acocutn details --> put in your email address again and the password you have set for the account which is the same that you will use to log into www.virignmedia.com it is up to you if you tick remember password but it si better to do so, dnt tick use secure password, then press next
then press finish
on the accounts page that you come back to select your one you have just set up and select properties
on the mail accoutn page rename the accoutn to something you want liek you said before 1stvirginmedia.com
then clcik on servers
tick on my server requires authencation
then clcik on settings
tehn select log on using
type in yoru email address and password again and press ok
then clcik on advanced
tick this server requires secure conenction ssl on both incomign adn outgoing
make sure outgoign smtp is 465 and incoming pop3 is 995 if you have sued imap ill post the port ;ater dnt have it to hand
then clcik apply and press ok

now try send adn reciving a email

Re: Server Settings for Outlook Express ?

Thanks for all that ... but I still get the same error message.
Perhaps I should point out that (sometimes) I get the message (see my original thread message above)

'local area connection' followed by 'A Network cable has been unplugged'
.. perhaps THIS is the real problem ?

Thanks to all,
COLIN

Try increasing the 'server timeout' duration under the 'Advanced' tab.

... why then can I access the Internet OK and also receive Emails ?

I have a person in my Road who transferred to Virgin Media about 18 mnths ago and he has just told me he never resolved the problem ?
(perhaps its because my Outlook Express was 'updated' by Orange ? ... ie they provided a CD that I had to install when they took over from Wanadoo)
