Virgin webspace
After many years I've finally created a document which requires web hosting, and thought of using my Virgin web space. So far I've found a few links all raising 404's and although I have never used FTP or anything similar before am guessing this service is no longer available and they have used the space for their backup service instead. Have I guessed correctly?
If so is there a free server where I can upload a relatively small text PDF?

Re: Virgin webspace
I've just checked my space at virgin.net using command line ftp ( ftp upload.virgin.net)
and it still seems to be there. Never used it after it was set up several years ago. If you use the command line ftp use "help" for command set once logged in.

Re: Virgin webspace
If it's only a PDF you're looking at hosting online you could instead use something like SkyDrive, DropBox, Google Docs. All will do this for free.
In my experience DropBox was the easiest to use, but SkyDrive offers the best control if you want to only grant certain accesses to certain people.

Re: Virgin webspace
The main help link to webspace tutorials does seem not to work. I did though find this one
http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MEZONE_OFFSET=
From there you should be able to find the instructions you need.

Re: Virgin webspace
Thanks everyone, I've got as far as creating a new account and virginmedia.com ending and webspace, and rather than download a program tried the FTP online uploader (as I've decided to add all my other related content from my other site) but it won't accept my login yet (bloody typical isn't it?). I added the exact name of the site at the beginning and the new password and nothing. I tried my old login just in case but of course that can't work as ntlworld.
I'm nearly there, any theories why it won't accept my login? I suppose I could get a program as a last resort but a site ought to work with your own details exactly as entered. No capitals, dots, symbols or any other malarkey, just letters and numbers as recommended. It says just the first bit is needed, the title, and can't think of any other permutations to try as it's all down on my list now (besides the password of course which is hidden). I'm guessing this is not an unusual problem so hopefully will be familiar with potential solutions as all the data is sitting here ready to be added.

Re: Virgin webspace
Like mark1234 said, use one of the freebie cloud document sharing services.
But if it has to be your virginmedia webspace, I vaguely recall having to use my default username but the original password - the initial one that NTL supplied when you opened the account before you chose one yourself. You did keep that first letter, didn't you?

Re: Virgin webspace
Wow, that's not in the rules- as far as I remember when I started I chose my own NTL access password for email and still use it. That was my original attempt and if they gave me a temporary one that shouldn't work as well even if I can find it. I did keep the letter though but not sure what sort of password information is on.
It took me about ten attempts to validate the new account as it kept adding junk to the address bar and ended up logging out and in again and then it accepted the information. That definitely works now as does the website, and if it really acts up will try one of the others, but as they provide something I had already made sense to try it.
Having said that once I've uploaded a few items (optimism) I've no idea how to make them separate pages linked from the homepage. I've managed to avoid such ordeals since day one and this would be the only one where I'd need a college class as the rest is all self/forum taught.

Re: Virgin webspace
The password is the one for whatever email account you are using for the webspace username

Re: Virgin webspace
Ah ok, thanks. I'll get it sorted
It's not normal that the pages are left up like that

Re: Virgin webspace
The link posted here worked fine for me, while the googled ones were all dead as dodos.
Getting into new sites for the first time is pretty much like a role playing game. I've punched every blooming combination of names and passwords in, and my new email virginmedia address gets me into the site perfectly with the new password, and sadly design-wise (unlike the much older and wiser MSN site I began with) does not have a hyperlink to make uploads without piddling around typing ftp addresses which just raise a password query which it won't accept.
Maybe the ultimate call to VM on 150 will be the only way to do it, they talk you through every step and somehow manage to find ways in to most problems whatever you've tried already. Maybe a email first as a taster. But one thing I do know, if I get my PDF up eventually I'll spend a lot longer learning to organise all the other documents I've got to follow. Then I probably will give up and try one of the others, but I've described every step I've taken and no user/password combination is better than any other, even the correct one.
Yep, I've just found the same problem reported on Virgin's own forum (never seen that before) and they said it's a problem at their end, if it happens you do have to call 150/151 and they reset the password and get in for you. It's beyond the user's scope once that's occurred so clearly no direct solution.
