Poor wireless connection upstairs.

Question for my daughter.

She has just had VM 50meg BB via a superhub installed. She tells me that if she uses her laptop downstairs she gets excellent connection/download/upload speeds but if she takes the same laptop upstairs the connection is very poor and keeps dropping out altogether.

Lives in a 1950's type semi detached.

Is there anything she could try or fit to boost the signal upstairs?

Jim.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

have you been over the channel change etc. with her..

download inSSIDer onto a wireless capable device such as a laptop which connects wirelessly. Run the program downloaded above and let it search for all networks within reach of you.

Note the channel numbers each network uses, they will range from 1-13 then set your Hubs wireless network to use a channel that is not in use. Don't leave the Hubs wireless channel as auto, it sucks.

192.168.100.1...
login...
advanced settings below the 3 boxes...
wireless settings
change channel (you see fit)
apply
exit

if that doesn't work or improve things then you can either buy a cheap d link 615 or buy a high end router sticking the SH into modem mode using your own router to connect..

wireless extenders may work for you but I've no knowledge or experience with them.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

Cheers TH,

Not actually seen her setup at all close up.

What is the default login assuming it has not been changed?

Is it still admin/password?
Jim.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

I have downloaded the inSSIDer to a usb drive to take down with me.

She did mention that the VM chap also gave her a usb dongle but that makes no difference.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

not completely sure on this but be sure to disable the inbuilt wireless before testing/using the usb adapter.

that said if the SH is whinging because of other networks then the adapter wont make much difference until you set the channel correctly.

---------- Post added at 20:51 ---------- Previous post was at 20:49 ----------

also does she use anything else wifi wise apart from the laptop you speak of? if not and its only that laptop then set the hub to use the 5GHz network band to which that usb adapter will connect.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

Noted, one question though, why will it perform perfectly downstairs even in rooms some distance away and yet be so poor upstairs?

She has an iPhone and Blackberry, nothing else that I can think of, possibly a wireless dongle that allows her to login to her office intranet.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

Take note of Thenry's post there mate, stay away from the 5Ghz setting if she wants the iPhone to connect wirelessly - the iPhone won't connect if you change to that.

Re the floors: We have a Shub in one downstairs room. The room directly above it gets 2 out of 3 bars on an iPad, the back upstairs room gets 1 to disconnected. I've to get round to moving the blasted thing, the range is dreadful for us so you're not on your own. I'm thinking of attaching another wireless router I have also.

Re: Poor wireless connection upstairs.

Having a quick read around here last night there was another new thread only yesterday with exactly the same problem.

I have left her to try the 'set channel' fix, if that doesn't work then I will rig up a router for her.

Jim.
