Apple Mail Not Working.

I am unable to receive mail on my 3 Apple Mail accounts. This morning I spent an hour on the phone to a VirginMedia techy. He took over my computer, altered all my mail settings in Apple mail e.g. pop.ntlworld.com to pop.viginmedia.com, pop accounts to imap, port to 993. After all this he told me that Apple Mail was the problem as I could get my mail on webmail.

I have had these accounts for the past 10 years, 8 years on a PC and the last 2 years on a imac and never had a problem like this before. It seems to have happened since Virgin Media altered their systems.

Can someone help please ?.

Hi,

Just so we are clear:

You have three email accounts that you access through Apple Mail?

What are the three email domains ie @ntlworld.com, for example?

Tim

Apple mail is the name of the mail program on OSX. Time machine is the backup program.

I think he's saying he accessed the accounts through a different email client when he used a PC.

Pleased its all working again for you

I use Apple Mail, but with Mobileme IMAP it's always worked seamlessly for me
I forward all my ntl mail to Mobileme and again its flawless

Will you be going over to a .me.com email when iCloud is launched later in the year ?

I do have mobileme and yess will be going over to icloud.

How have you set up Mobileme IMAP + ntl mail. Do you just forward all your ntl mail to Mobileme in the settings in webmail ?.
I find that if I set it up like that all my mail is duplicated, so I am obviously setting it up wrong.

Re: Apple Mail Not Working.

If you set up forwarding of your NTLWorld email address, using the option in the NTLWorld webmail interface, you then need to stop the Mail application on your Mac from going to pop.ntlworld.com (or whatever they use these days ... it's been ages since I had this set up on mine).

It sounds like this may be what you have had going on in the past. NTLWorld sending a copy of your mails to your @me.com inbox, then the Mail app on your Mac polling both me.com and ntlworld.com to download mail, and getting copies of your NTL messages from both sources.

As the amount of storage available in dotmac, and latterly MobileMe, has increased over the years, I've taken to making more and more use of the capabilities of IMAP and keeping all my sent, received and draft messages on Apple's servers rather than using Mail on my Mac to organise everything offline. This has become more and more useful since I got an iPad as well ... when I get time I need to go through the last few of the Mail mailboxes (folders, confusingly named) still stored 'On My Mac' and transfer the stuff I still want to keep back online.

I want to move everything to iCloud soon after launch, but as I have an iMac that is not Lion-upgradeable there's the small matter of buying a new one first.

Just go into your Virgin web mail, set it to forward to your mobileme account then in the same menu choose "delete Virgins copy"

Then you will only get the message delivered by Mobileme IMAP to your Apple Mail app

And also delete or disable your ntl account from the mail app

Okay many thanks, I will do that.

I have used forwarding in Virgin webmail as per the previous posting. The only problem as I see it doing this is when all mail comes through on Mobileme there is no individuality.
I have 2 accounts - one for friends and family and one for others (web sites), my wife also has an account.

well I suppose there are a few ways around that depending on what you are trying to achieve

Mobileme will only be a "catchall" account and for me thats fine as all my emails are for myself, my wife as her own account she receives those on her ipad via her Gmail account

if you want to keep all those account separate, without changing to much, then I would, forward yours to MobileMe, keep your wife's and the web sites at ntl

then set up those accounts in Apple Mail i.e. MobileMe for you, ntl1 for your wife, and ntl2 for you websites

That way the 3 account would be split and individual email delivered to the relevant account

if you look at the screenshot, you will see I have a Gmail account set up, (now disabled ) this was for when I wanted to keep my Gmail separate as you do for your other accounts

If you need help with this then feel free to PM me and I will help were ever I can

Before I retired to my garden, I used to do this all day for folk as I worked in IT support so its not a problem if you think I can help
