Any way of deleting web emails?

I use Thunderbird to collect my Emails all in one go and like it that way as I organise them and delete them as I want.

Recently I went into my Emails via the website and found a whole backlog sitting there from ages ago.

I dont want to have them sitting there. Is there any way of getting rid of them.
Could this be to do with the fact I'm an ntlworld email address user.

Thanks for your help.

halcyon.

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

I suspect you are using POP mail? I found that with Outlook Express. I think you might need to use IMAP mail clients, but even then the default delete folders need to be carefully set.

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

Yeah I'm currently using POP mail.
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to switch over then and see if IMAP works.

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

I might be wrong, but isn't there a setting that you access through the webmail service that allows you to choose whether to keep emails on the server or delete them as soon as they're downloaded?

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

I use Outlook 2002 and I've noticed that emails that Outlook has downloaded are still on the server, I'm sure there was an option in Outlook that you could select to say if you kept a copy on the server enven after downloaded.

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

I found the same thing when setting up my wife's Blackberry last year. Since Virgin/ntl email accounts were migrated to Google, you will find that the default settings leave your mail on the server still. Even when your POP3 email client is set to not leave messages on the server, Google ignores that.

Work block webmail so I cannot get the exact instructions now but there is an option on the site to actually delete mail when it's downloaded.

There is an option in Outlook to do this, but the GMail servers ignore it, depending on what the option is set to on the webmail server.

Re: Any way of deleting web emails?

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies.
I've looked around and now sorted it out.

Login to your Virginmedia mail via the web.
Then click on "Settings".
Then "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"

Choose to delete Virgin's copy in the option:
"When messages are accessed with POP"
