Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

Hi,

As ntlworld.com email addresses are actually hosted by Google, is it possible to get proper email push syncing in the same way as is possible with regular gmail addresses? Or is it POP3/IMAP only?

Thanks

Re: Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

It will do exactly the same as any Gmail account especially if you mean regards recent: mode which will download your email onto multiple devices.

It will not do exactly the same as his Gmail account as Google offer a proprietary push-mail app that works only for Google Mail itself and nothing else.

You may find third-parties offering a push-mail service that will work with generic IMAP accounts however Google's own push-mail will not work with VM Mail.

I did mention recent: mode which brings all emails down to my phone as well as any other machine on my network so second half of post missed.

Re: Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

Thanks for your replies.

I've looked up the recent: mode and it's a variation on POP3 which isn't the push mail I was hoping for. qasdfdsaq (!) has given me the bad news I wasn't after.

Looks like I'm going to need a bit of playing around to get something I'm happy with once I get shiny new phone in a week or two.

Thanks again.

If i were to enter my ntlworld account settings on an Android handset, would it sync those accounts the same way it syncs gmail accounts?

Re: Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

No, it wouldn't. Virgin Media Mail doesn't currently have the correct services enabled for it do so. You have to use POP or IMAP

I just forward all my NTLworld emails to my Gmail account, use the NTLworld account less and less now.

That's because recent: mode has nothing to do with push email, and was therefore irrelevant to the thread.

It depends what phone you're getting, but there are plenty of ways around it.

IMAP has a push-mail function built-in (IMAP IDLE) but because Android doesn't support this feature, Google use their own proprietary push-mail function for GMail on Android devices. The "Generic" push-mail function of IMAP IDLE is supported on most non-Android smartphones and GMail so you should be able to use VM mail too. On Android there are third party apps that restore this functionality as well.

Failing that, pretty much all mobile email devices (including Android ones) have a settable "check every" option, which actively polls for email every e.g. 15 minutes. This is more wasteful of battery but gets you close to push-mail like functionality without actually having to pay extra for it. For most people a delay of 15 minutes in receiving email on their phone isn't really a problem, but you can set it to 5 minutes or an hour, or whatever suits really. It's not true push-mail but it gets you your email onto your phone.

It does work by letting your mail go onto multiple machines if Push is not available, but once again being pedantic prevails because you failed to mention it.

Re: Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

No, answering the user instead of going on a tangent with your irrelevant information prevails. The user asked for push-mail not for getting your mail onto multiple machines.

So I point out information that's incorrect and you whine about it. I don't waste time pointing out correct but irrelevant information and you whine about it. You whine me when I criticize information you post, then you whine at me for *not* criticizing part of your post? Not making a very strong case here are you. Grow up.

Push is always available, it's just how you use it.

Re: Push email from ntlworld.com to mobile phones?

Just a follow up now I have my phone:

It's a Samsung Omnia 7, one of the lovely new Windows Phone 7 devices. It allowed me to set up my ntlworld address as a gmail account, no problem. Then, as a gmail account WP7 knows that push is available and offers it as a choice.

In testing it's mere seconds between pressing Send and the mail being on my phone. Couldn't be any better.

Cheers.
