POP3 email clients email access issue
I have a weird problem with my wifes email account, if she gets an email on her HTC Wildfire it wont download to her Windows Live Mail client on the PC but if she gets the email first on the PC then it wont download to the phone. It's as if once one POP client has read the email no other POP clients can download it. My email is setup exactly the same as my wifes on both the PC and phone (except I have an HTC Desire) and it works ok for me on my account. I checked the settings on the VM mail server and they are also identical. I spoke to VM support and they are stumped.
I also noticed that Windows Live Mail does not have the "Keep email on server" box ticked but it leaves the email there anyway.
Anyone seen this before?
David

Re: POP3 email clients email access issue
You need to do this on your wife's POP account.
Quote:
Receiving messages using multiple POP3 e-mail clients with 'recent:' mode
If you would like to receive your e-mail using multiple POP3 e-mail clients, you will need to make a slight change to the username settings in your e-mail clients. This change will instruct the mail server to deliver all messages that have been received in your account over the last 30 days, allowing you to download the same messages on multiple e-mail clients. Simply add the word recent followed by a colon ( in front of your current username. For example, if your e-mail username is richard.branson@virginmedia.com, you would need to change it to recent:richard.branson@virginmedia.com.

This is a proprietary workaround.
The way POP3 works in principle is an email is downloaded off a server, then deleted from the server so no other clients can receive it. This is how POP3 is designed and how it should work.
If you want messages to stay on the server, you could do what Masque mentioned (as I said, it's a proprietary workaround) but this will only work with VM mail and is not part of the POP3 standard, so will not work with most other email providers.
The better solution would be to use the "Leave a copy of messages on the server" option in your client (ironically, Google breaks the POP3 protocol and ignores this), or, even better, use IMAP instead of POP3 as POP3 is outdated and insecure.

Recent mode is actually a Googlemail tool so and can be used by Virginmedia email account users because they use the Googlemail platform.

SKY email users can also use Recent mode.

I'm with "qasdfdsaq"
use IMAP.
It's the only way to go. That way no matter where you send/download from, your account will always be synchronized.

You do know that this thread was about accessing email on his Blackberry and not about the virtues of IMAP over POP3.

Grow up Masque.
Since when did everybody stay on subject on forums sites.
Anyway, the IMAP response was relevant. It offered an alternative solution.

I take it you missed the smiley at the end of my post which all forums tend to have so try looking first before commenting.
If the OP is happy with POP3 then he will stick with it as not everyone is a IMAP fan.

Not about to get into a [Mod Edit] contest with you.
I stick to my original statement

Re: POP3 email clients email access issue
Do not use words which invoke the swear filter, or use asterisks to avoid invoking the swear filter - further occurrences will invoke infractions.

Even if the OP is happy with POP3 over IMAP (and there's no reason he should be, as what he wants is exactly what IMAP is designed to do and exactly what POP3 is designed not to do) - Google mail (And consequently VM mail) not breaking the POP3 standard would still be a better solution than a proprietary workaround.

I was pointing out it origins and that 2 major companies allow its use.

Re: POP3 email clients email access issue
I was pointing out it's origins are forceful breaking of standards and you shouldn't assume other companies allow its use.
