VM's Gmail & Windows Live Mail 2011

Is anybody using this combination and happy with it, especially if you have multiple email accounts. I'm trying to use it IMAP enabled, so I can use the gmail storage, rather than worrying about local backups. But perhaps I've got that concept wrong and should be using POP?

I've managed to turn off the windows mail, junk mail system so that spam is now retained in the gmail spam.

I have problems that windows mail deletes to it's own deleted items folder. As a result you delete and then Gmail sends you another copy of the email. I now understand that deleted mail should be moved to the gmail bin folder. Anyone know how I can reset windows mail to do that?

If I'm actually using gmail for all my storage, and windows mail 2011, is effectively a viewing screen I don't need the duplicated windows mail folders such as inbox and deleted items. Can I remove those.

Is there an alternative IMAP mail client that I should be using instead of Windows Live Mail 2011. I'm running windows 7, so Live Mail seems to be the preferred email client, if you stay with microsoft.

Re: VM's Gmail & Windows Live Mail 2011

I thought that WLM 2011 actually played better with Gmail based applications? I'm not at home, but when I set it up it seemed to work correctly with Deleted Items and the Gmail folders

Re: VM's Gmail & Windows Live Mail 2011

I have VM (NTL) account, Gmail and Domain Name (running on Google Apps) successfully running on Windows Live mail 2011 using IMAP.

I seem to recall there were a number of settings, here's what I can remember (I just exported a copy of profiles in case needed again).

Select 'Properties' on each account, then the IMAP Tab, ensure 'Store Special Folders on IMAP Server' is selected.

On the general Mail Options tab de-select 'Save a copy of messages in Sent Items Folder'.

There was some problem with the 'All Mail' Folder, which I resolved .. I just can't readily recollect what I did to do it I think you can right-click on it and select 'Remove' or something along those lines.

IMAP now works very well, would never go back to POP.

Re: VM's Gmail & Windows Live Mail 2011

GMail has a funny way of creating "virtual folders" that show up on IMAP but don't actually exist, they're just alternative views of labels/tags you've set up that can't be properly conveyed via standard IMAP. Most of these aren't actually duplicated folders or emails. As above though, there are a number of settings you can change, such as telling Windows Live Mail not to delete to a folder at all, or to delete to a folder you specify.

As for clients, if you have MS office, then Outlook is a far better all-round client.

Don't ever use POP. Really, don't.
