Virgin Email: Where are all my sent items?

Since Virgin mail became Google mail I seem to have hardly anything in my sent items folder.

Where do they go to?

I use outlook and so I have a copy of my sent items but when I want to refer to them on another PC they are not there.

What's up? Does anyone know?

Re: Virgin Email: Where are all my sent items?

I would have thought that they will only be in outlook. You would only get them google mail if you sent them from there.

Re: Virgin Email: Where are all my sent items?

Check your settings. Are you using IMAP or POP3 in Outlook? IMAP would synchronise the folders (including Sent) but POP wouldn't. Sounds like you've set up the latter?...

Re: Virgin Email: Where are all my sent items?

OK, this is what my settings on Virgin Webmail (which I believe is Gmail really) says:

POP download
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since undefined

IMAP access
1. Status: IMAP is enabled

So how can it be both?

---------- Post added at 19:57 ---------- Previous post was at 19:54 ----------

and in my Outlook it says (in the account settings box):

Type: POP/SMTP

Because that's just the types of connection allowed at the server side. What you need is the connection type you're actually using in Outlook:

So you're using POP3. Try using IMAP instead, and you should find that your folders (including Sent) synchronise across all instances (any devices connected to the server, the VMmail/GMail server itself etc).

Beware though that, depending on your settings in Outlook, POP3 may have downloaded the messages to your computer then deleted them on the server. In other words, do NOT delete the POP3 account in Outlook until you've added the IMAP version and ensured the mails are still present server-side!

I hope this makes sense, and is of some help to you. As fob-offish as it sounds (which isn't intentional), a few minutes on Google should be a great help to you with this. It's easy once you get started.

If sent via Outlook they will not appear in the Webmail version because they were not sent from there.

Ta...I'll read it up first.

I am paranoid about email because it is so important to me.

Save them to a standalone hard drive or to a writeable cd if you need to keep them.

But as I said above, surely switching to IMAP would solve this? It certainly works on 'vanilla' GMail; or any other IMAP server for that matter.

As for backing up the mails, you could always add a second account to Outlook (using IMAP) and then just drag and drop your old locally-stored Sent folder to a newly created Sent folder on the mail server. Then just use the IMAP account as the default one, and you'll be 100% in sync in future.

Most people tend to use POP so in that scenario it does not happen and those same people are wary of IMAP.

Why are POPers wary of IMAP?

Because IMAP is different to POP3 and many people like to use something they know without going outside their comfort zone, if it suits your needs go for it.

Re: Virgin Email: Where are all my sent items?

Also, I've just read that POP3 clients suck the emails down from the server and therefore the only version is on my Hard Disk. That's not the case with Virgin Mail though. All my incoming mails remain on the server even though I'm using POP3. This is not as id described on the various websites.

That is how it works with Virginmedia webmail though.
