setup email on HTC Desire or Desire HD
Has anyone setup their phone to receive emails using the pop3 account or are they just logging into webmail using internet browser, this seems to be an ongoing issue of trying to receive your emails using a pop3 account like outlook on anything mobile like phone or laptop. The error I am recieving at the moment when trying to setup pop3 account is "outgoing server does not support authentication. Please verify your outgoing server settings, which should be if not mistaken are smtp.ntlworld.com

Re: setup email on HTC Desire or Desire HD
When using a mobile the outgoing server needs to be that of the mobile network. Not your email account. Not sure what the VM one is. maybe stmp.virginmobile.co.uk?
I have the regular Desire and have just set up a google mail account as it was a lot easier and all my ntlworld emails are set to forward to it.

Re: setup email on HTC Desire or Desire HD
As the VM mail system is based on GMail it should be quite straightforward, particularly when using an Android handset.
Easiest way to do so is to log into webmail and ensure IMAP is enabled on your account.
Then go into 'Email' on your device, setup up a new IMAP account and the details are as follows:
Username: user.name@virginmedia.com
IMAP Server: imap.virginmedia.com
Port:993
Security Type: SSL
Outgoing Server: smtp.virginmedia.com
Port: 465
Security Type: SSL

Re: setup email on HTC Desire or Desire HD
Thanks whizzard I will try the imap setup, just out of interest what is the difference on that compared to pop3. Hi stephen i do have a gmail account which you obviously have to setup on an android, but I only wanted to use the ntl account as dont see the point in various email addressess, also dont understand why the ntl account could not be configured instead of the gmail as its powered by google.

Think I got the idea of imap and pop3. Looking at it I should have my outlook set to imap.

IMAP is more catered towards mobile devices in that it generally leaves the messages on the server unless you request their removal. This allows you to be able to then download and archive your mail to your desktop/laptop.
If you require different settings (ie. have an email address ending in ntlworld.com) let me know and I'll provide them, though all the info you need should be on the virginmedia.com help site.

Re: setup email on HTC Desire or Desire HD
The only thing about IMAP, though, is that you end up with your whole email history taking up space on your phone's memory which may or may not be an issue for you.
I use POP on my iPhone, with the phone set NOT to delete messages off the server. THat way, if I see an email first on my phone I still get a copy of it to my PC when I next log on there, and I allow the POP deletion from the server at that point. If I see it first on the PC, I don't get it on the phone at all. That's the way I like it.
The first reply is still implortant though. The ntlworld smtp server isn't fully migrated so as I understand it so you still can't send mail via it if you aren't connected to the ntl network (i.e. you're away from your own wireless network and on a 3G connection).
You would need to use your phone carrier's smtp server to send the emails (which the receiver will still see as coming from your ntlworld address), or set up a separate GMAIL account for example and use the GMAIL smtp server to send from your ntlworld address as the GMAIL smtp server is fully smtp-authentication enabled.
I believe the above is still true.

Because the ntlworld smtp server is set not to allow emails to be sent from it unless the sender is connected to the network. It's a spam prevention measure, otherwise major spammers from around the world can connect to the server (because no password is required to send via smtp on the server) and send millions of spam messages which look to originate on the ntlworld domain and it makes ntlworld unpopular.
Once the ntlworld server is fully migrated to the Google platform "later this year", smtp authentication will be enabled. At that point, you will need to have your pasword set in your smtp connection settings, and then it will be safe for the server to be opened up for ntlworld users to send mail from it when not connected to the network (e.g. when on somebody else's wireless network or using a 3G connection).

When setting up VM mail on your HTC the phone assumes that you need authentication on outgoing mails and ticks the box in the smtp setup, just untick and you are done.
