POP3 and Outlook 2010
I am installing a new PC running Win7 x64 Ultimate and have got round to transferring all my eMail accounts to it.
When I first got the machine I installed Outlook 2007 and setup an eMail address to use from it. This worked fine using POP3 and SMTP (but not SSL) so I deferred setting up all the accounts until I was ready. I then installed Office 2010 Professional and the previously setup eMail account transferred and has been working correctly. Now that I am ready to transfer all the accounts I find it impossible to setup an eMail account in Outlook 2010.
There appears to be a problem getting the username and password recognised by the incoming server.
Manually setting up the account was necessary as the automated system in Outlook 2010 does not find, with encrypted or unencrypted access, the server details it is looking for. Using the manual settings does not work either.
The eMail accounts all work via webmail but I need to store the messages locally. Help required

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
Ports are non standard, you should have i/c POP3 server (pop3.ntlworld.com) on port 995, o/g SMTP (smtp.ntlworld.com) on port 465 with both using SSL; other settings, username etc the same

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
Was having the same problem, laptop running winxp and Office 2010 no problem, PC running Win7 and Office 2010 could not recieve emails (was OK using Office 2007). Applied the above solution and all ok. Only other way I could get it to work was to disable Norton Email Antivirus monitoring.
Thanks Pete.
Dave.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately that does not work for me. Is it possible that the pop3.virginmedia.com i/c server is different from the pop3.ntlworld.com one?

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
I'm running xp pro with outlook 2010, I too am having problems with athentication of username and password.
i can log on to view my virginmedia emails using my browser so know the username and password are correct.
Here's my step by step:
Your name: My name.
Email Address: Full email address including @virginmedia.com
Password: Password.
Retype Password: Retyped password.
Clicked on next.
Does not find my settings in encrypted or unencrypted mode.
Click on Manually Configure Server Settings:
Select Internet E-Mail.
Your Name: My name.
Email address: Full email address including @virginmedia.com.
Account type: Pop3
Incoming: pop3.virginmedia.com
Outgoing: smtp.virginmedia.com
User name: Full email address including @virginmedia.com
Password: Password
Click remember password
uncheck test settings
Click more settings
General tab:
Mail account. Typed full email address
Outgoing server tab:
Click on my outgoing server requires athentication.
Click on using.
Username: Full email address.
Password: Password
Advanced tab:
Incoming server: 995
Click this server requires an encrypted connection.
Outgoing server: 465
Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL.
Server timeouts: Slide to about 5 minutes.
Click OK.
When i click send/recieve i keep getting asked to enter password that I have already saved.
To say I am getting narked is an understatement.
I have telephoned up VM and they say they can help me fix this problem but it would cost £5, I declined as I pay over £100 a month as it is the money grabbing *****
Hope you get a fix so I can fix my problem too

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
These are the VM Settings from the web but there is a problem using outlook; for ntl addresses, you need to leave SMTP authentication (on the outging server tab) disabled then hopefully, if virginmedia addresses behave the same you will be sorted.
Apparently this will change in the future when VM sort something out
Manual configuration settings for e-mail
Type of information
Settings to enter
Sending mail (SMTP)
SMTP server name
smtp.virginmedia.com
SMTP SSL
Enabled
SMTP port
465
SMTP authentication
Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
SMTP username
Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com
Receiving mail (POP3)
POP3 server name
pop3.virginmedia.com
POP3 SSL
Enabled
POP3 port
995
POP3 authentication
Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
POP3 username
Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com
POP3 SPA (Secure Password Authentication)
Disabled

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
As I said this is just not good enough.
What we need is someone with inside knowledge of Outlook 2010 to check what Virginmedia is doing when it rejects the login. Why is it rejected? not just Failed or -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.

Are you running an anti-virus with specific email scanner on the pc?

re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
I have just tried setting up my own @virginmedia.com email address using Outlook 2010 and I cannot get it to work either, my default @blueyonder.co.uk address works perfectly so this must be an outage that Virginmedia is unaware of at the moment.
I even disabled MSE just in case as I find the item below online to no avail.

Re: POP3 and Outlook 2010
Have just succeeded in setting up Outlook 2010 for my @ntlworld.com accounts, settings as follows:
Main Settings page
Usernames full e mail address and passwords as usual
Incoming and outgoing mail servers need to be pop3.virginmedia.com & smtp.virginmedia.com, it will not work with .ntlworld.com.
Require logon using SPA appears to make no difference so I left it ticked.
More Settings
Outgoing Server tab - tick requires authentication, tick use same settings as incoming mail server
Advanced tab - pop3 port 995, tick box requires ssl, smtp port 465 ans select ssl from the drop down list
These settings also work for my @virginmedia accounts
