Email on iPhone 4
Hi All
I know this has been discussed before but I cant seem to find the thread. I have just bought an iphone 4 and was looking to setup my email but dont really know where to start. To start with when I go to add email accounts I get a list of option, Exchange, mobileme, Gmail, yahoo, Aol and other. I have been trying to enter my settings under other but keep getting a message saying user name/password are incorrect, but they are not. I have also seen on another site someone saying you need to enter Ports etc but there is no option for this. I am using an @virginmedia.com email address, could someone possibly give me some info in how to do this.
Cheers
Andy

Re: Email on iPhone 4
This is what I've done on my iPhone 4 to configure IMAP email
1. Go to Settings, and then 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars', 'Add Account...', select 'Other', and finally 'Add Mail Account'
2. On the 'New Account' screen you see, enter the following:
Name : <whatever your name is>
Address : <your email address>
Password : <whatever your password is>
Description : <whatever you want to call it>
3. Press 'Next' in the top right.
4. In the 'Incoming Mail Server' section, enter the following:
Host Name : imap.virginmedia.com
User Name : <your email address>
Password : <should already be filled in from previous screen>
5. In the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section, enter the following (note that I re-typed the user/password again.. just to make sure they were what I entered earlier):
Host Name : smtp.virginmedia.com
User Name : <your email address>
Password : <whatever your password is>
6. Press 'Next' in the top right.. it'll go and verify your account. Might take a minute.
7. If all is well, you should have two entries for 'Mail' and 'Notes' on a page.. Ensure that 'Mail' is set to 'On', and 'Notes' is set to off.
8. Select 'Done' (or whatever it's called).
9. Go back to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendar' settings, and select the email account you just added.
10. It should show a screen with 'Account Info' under 'IMAP'. Click this.
11. Now click on the button saying 'SMTP smtp.virginmedia.com' (under 'Outgoing Mail Server').
12. Under 'Primary Server' it should list 'smtp.virginmedia.com' as 'On'. Click on it.. (ignore the other SMTP servers for things like your gmail, if listed).
13. Ensure the details under 'Outgoing Mai Server' are correct (smtp.virginmedia.com, <your email address>, password filled in, Use SSL = ON).
14. Ensure that the 'Authentication' bit is set to 'Password' (you may need to click and select from the list given to you).
15. Ensure the 'Server Port' is set to 465
16. Get back to the 'Account Info' screen, and click the 'Advanced' button at the bottom.
17. Under 'Incoming Settings', make sure it's got 'SSL ON', 'Authentication Password'.. leave the "IMAP Path Prefix" well alone, and the Server Port should already be at 993.
And if you don't want the iPhone to be fetching email all the time (and would rather it just got email when you started the Mail application)
18. Get back to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendar' screen under 'Settings', and click 'Fetch New Data'
19. On the 'Fetch New Data' screen, make sure 'Fetch' is set to 'Manually'.
20. Scroll to the bottom of that screen, and click 'Advanced'
21. Again, same as I said in 19.. set your email accounts listed here to 'Manual'.
And that's it.
My email address is actually an @ntlworld.com one.. but (for the benefit of those who are reading who also have non-virginmedia email addresses) it works ok.. just make sure you leave the incoming/outgoing server names as listed above.
Dean

Re: Email on iPhone 4
I set mine up by simply synchronising the exchange mail settings in iTunes and then adding the passwords

Re: Email on iPhone 4
AFAIK you won't be able to send mails as Virgin media's SMTP server will not accept mails sent from outside the Virgin Media network.

Which is a handy reminder that I was going to ask when/if the migration of smtp.ntlworld.com will be complete as I'm about to lose the access to O2's smtp server which I currently use for that purpose
Or can anyone with an ntlworld address use one of the other Virgin Media smtp servers to send emails when outside the network?

Re: Email on iPhone 4
The smtp.ntlworld.com migration is still ongoing. In the meantime you should be able to use smtp.virginmedia.com instead
