Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

I can't sign into my Virgin Media on my Mac Mail.

I've checked the settings according to Virgin Help page and they look right.

I've recently changed from ntl to Virgin Media and it was all working well. I had a couple of mails not wanting to send yesterday but they have gone now ... and now can't connect on Virgin Media - although the ntl has signed in ....... hope this makes sense to you ... because it doesn't make any sense to me!!

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

Phoned 151 (hoping to get England but got India ... and its a pain trying to understand the convesation) this morning and checked the settings. All fine but mail is still not coming through via Mac Mail (although its fine on the Virgin site).

Waiting for phone call back (hopefully) after some more checks.

Getting error message

The server error encountered was: The connection to the server “pop3.virginmedia.com” on port 465 timed out.

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

I have in the past encountered an annoying problem with Mac Mail where it insists on retaining old, corrupted settings even after you try to re-save corrected ones over the top of them.

You may want to try completely erasing your Virgin account from Mail and then reinstalling it. Before you do that you will need to ensure you have a written note of all the settings you will need, and also make sure that any old messages you want to keep are stored in folders (Mail annoyingly calls them 'mailboxes') that are local to your Mac (because if you have all your old messages in the account inbox you will lose them when you delete the account, unless they all still exist in your webmail view as well).

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

This is an issue with Mac Mail and Apple are supposed to be aware of it so try calling them on 0844 209 0611.

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

What is the nature of the issue, Masque? Is it the intermittent error I described above or something else? I've not experienced any problems with Virgin email via Mac Mail this week.

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

No sweating buckets smiley!!!!

Thanks Chris.

That seems to have done the job!!!

Saved my mails (but looks like I didn't need to - they are still there!!! )

Deleted account .... re-entered details.

Mail came in but wouldn't go out.

Rechecked outgoing details and altered them ... and fingers crossed ... mail went out!!!

Phew!!!

Computers do my head in.

I now remember having HUGE problems with Mac Mail when setting up in the first place and actually gave up trying!!!!! Now ... all I've got to do is remember what happened this time!!

Thanks for your help!

Sorry ... forgot to mention the other annoying feature of Mail, namely that it retains all the SMTP (outgoing mail) settings you have ever used, completely separately from your main account information, so you need to delete and re-enter those as a separate operation.

Looks like you discovered that though. Glad it worked out for you.

That is probably the issue as we have been advised if we know everything is set exactly as it should be to refer them to Apple or our Digital Home Support

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

Would Apple know anything about Virgin mail though Masque????

I know I could also say do Virgin know anything about Macs ....... but I've had brilliant advice from this forum so know either someone knows what they are talking about or actually use Macs too!!

Cheers everyone.

I always recommend this forum

Apple are supposed to be aware of the issue and as long as the settings are correct on our end they are supposed to know what to do.

Re: Unable to Sign Into Virgin Media on e-mail Client

It's not a problem with Virgin Mail, FairyFairy. It's a known issue with Mac Mail ... a long-term 'bug' in the software, basically. Sometimes the settings get corrupted and the only way to refresh them is to fully delete and re-install. It can happen regardless of which email service you're trying to use with Mail.
