SMTP issues - can't send email

Hi,

I've been using the new Gmail based ntlworld.com email happily for several months with no issues.

Have SMTP over SSL, port 465, with authentication enabled - has been fine.

Yesterday, VM changed my IP address onto a new range (now in the 213.105.x.x range, was previously in the 80.5.x.x) range

Since then I've been unable to send email. Outlook 2003 reports "the server did not respond, it may not support SSL or authentication"

I've tried all combinations of disabling auth, SSL, etc, and even tried plain old SMTP on port 25 (which reports error 421). I can ping smtp.ntlworld.com ok.
I've tried creating a new account in Outlook, same issue.

Any one else having or had similar problems? Any suggestions?

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

yea, I had same problem with the SSL connection yesterday, although I was able to send through non-secure over port 25. It still seems to be refusing to accept over SSL this morning, although my IP range hasnt changed.

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

It is a known issue and the latest update is for it to be fixed by midday today and is just affecting sending through email clients using SMTP but it should work fine in Webmail

The latest fix is now 1600 this afternoon and it is a P1 priority fault.

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

Presumably, since it still is not possible to use Outlook 2007, the problem has not yet been fixed?

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

Mighty Magpie,

I am now able to send using WLM as of 16:30, so maybe you have a local issue with Outlook 2007?

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

Simple Simon, Not sure what WLM means?

All was working fine until I went on holiday. Now i get the following error message when I try to send/receive.

Task 'NTL - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC1A) : 'Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance.'

I have messed about with my settings to no avail - I have an NTLWorld.com email address and had a problem several weeks ago, which eventually I was able to resolve.

Cheers

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

WLM = Windows Live Mail

Could it be that you are not using SSL?

I'm using Outlook XP but still cannot send e-mail. I've also had my IP address changed into the 213.105.x.x range.

It looks like the fault has not been fixed yet. Wonder how long it will be before it is fixed?

Still can't send today. I'm using Mozilla Firefox if that has any bearing.

Question Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

Is this still happening to everyone else?

I still cannot send any emails at all (no settings changed on my part) using Thunderbird v3.2.4. Similarly, my other half cannot send emails from her laptop using Outlook 2003.

Two separate computers, different email addess', different email clients - both unable to send.

As I say, no settings have been changed on either PC since they last worked.

Just don't know what to do, any ideas? The VM Status Page says everything is working normally!

Webmail is OK.

There is a problem on the Baguley server which NTL are endeavouring to fix.

You may be able to get a work around by using port 995 with SSL on the incoming server and port 465 with SSL on the outgoing server and using smtp.virgin.net.

Hope this helps.

Re: SMTP issues - can't send email

Thanks, that's set my mind at ease.

I have just got off the phone to tech support and they said everything was ok at their end!

It obviously isn't. He recommended that I delete my email account and set it up from new. He didn't seem to understand that I have the same problem on two different PC's running different clients. He also said VM do not support Outlook 2003 nor Thunderbird!
