The new email system and mailwasher

I have used mailwasher for many years now, and despite knowing it probably doesn't really help - there is a certain satisfaction from bouncing back emails to those annoying spam people out there.

So imagine my surprise when I log into my email via the web portal for the first time this morning, and find that every single email I had bounced or deleted, was sat there in my inbox!

I'm confused now as to how I'm supposed to have mailwasher setup. I followed some instructions I found on the support forums for VM, and mailwasher gives the impression that it has bounced or deleted emails as I can no longer receive them via it after doing so. But they haven't actually gone anywhere?

Or, are VM storing emails on some servers of their own and they are being sent out to me and also being dumped into the new gmail setup?

edit: I've also noticed my gmail box now has a gazillion spam emails in it. When I used my ntl account before this switch, I prided myself on keeping the email address for friends only and never receoved a single spam message. Howcome now it goes via gmail I'm getting over a dozen a day??

Puzzled and in the need of any advice cheers

Re: The new email system and mailwasher

Never understood how mail washer works... If it's accepted by an SMTP server then as far as a spammer is concerned it's delivered and is happy.. Bouncing back to a spoofed address is just clogging up the finite bandwidth that we all have to use and not effecting the spammers at all (do you actually think they use a real email address???)

Re: The new email system and mailwasher

Well, not really related to my question, but I'll humour you. As it stands (and I did query in my original post as to whether it was effective or not) it is a nice quick one click check of emails without the need to download them. It is effective at showing which mails are spam, and with another click I can delete every mail off the server without ever needing to sign into webportals and sift through everything.

edit: I forgot to mention - it is setup to receive mails from all my mail accounts as well. It really is far better than signing in to each one separately.

Re: The new email system and mailwasher

No humour but deadly serious, bouncing back spam is frowned upon and blackholes are the way to go.

Mailwasher isn't stopping the spam at source as they are already effectively sent.. and recieved by the SMTP server and in the end is just doing the job that a good smtp setup should be doing but mailwasher is doing it to late..

Re: The new email system and mailwasher

All your emails go to webmail first as the is a very good Spam filter inbuilt into webmail and any emails that are not deemed to be spam will go into the webmail inbox and then into your email client inbox and then any mails you do not want will be caught by your spam filter.

you can go into webmail and put put a tick against the unwanted emails and then consign them to the spam folder.

This is the way the system works and it is not a fault.

Hi. I have used MW for years and have recently upgraded to the new 2010 version. I have no problem with it but you have to set up the filters correctly. If I can be of any help pm me. As far as your comments re Webmail, I agree. Before the migration to Gigglemail, I hardly get any spam. Now I get hundreds in my spam box. It's a pain!

I have been using a gmail account for years. I do not have ANY trouble with spam because all I do is report the spam which is then automatically barred in the automatic spam filter.Occasionally I instruct the system to delete the mail in the spam folder. If you don't use the system the way it is intended then it will fail to 'learn' what is spam and will include it in your inbox forever.

How about really giving the system a chance before deciding it isn't working?
