Orphanned email Account
I thought I would start a new thread.
On 9th July my email system stopped working. The problem started when I moved home last December and my email address ****@ntlworld.com was apparently not migrated. I had become an orphanned account. No problem the helpdesk said but will take a few days. Several calls later I'm still trying to gain access.
Curiously my smtp access is now ok....it recognises me and I can now, send emails via outlook express....this started working on 26th July.
However my pop3 access is still denied and I am unable to receive emails. I continue to be fobbed off by the helpdesk staff telling me to use webmail. I find webmail systems pretty awful and without the full faclities of an email application. Why should I be denied the full use of an email address which is known to hundreds of people over the last 10 years of use?
Any ideas anybody on how I might regain full use of my old email address via the pop3/smtp access? There does not seem to be any form of escalation process in the Virgin media support organisation.
Vic

Re: Orphanned email Account
Have you changed the settings in your client if needed?
https://www.virginmedia.com/account/...ngs-change.php
...also log into webmail and check to see if you've have the POP settings turned on. Settings >> Forwarding and POP/IMAP

VMs smtp authentication checks are rare so you can send mail as any valid name in the system for months even years until the server suddenly asks for a password and you find that yours doesn't work. Of course you *could* wait until the genuine user supplies it. (on 26th July?)
Happened to me, I could even send mail by setting myself as "postmaster@virgin.net"

Re: Orphanned email Account
This will change later this year. We will be moving the SMTP servers over to Google so you can only set your from address to an address you actually use.
We will be emailing all customers with more information when we are ready to start this.

I feel helpless now and very stuck with this problem that started on 9th July. The news that smtp access will get difficult is also very worrying.

Glad to hear that some tidying up is being done here. I ended up being able to send mail as anybody BUT myself. A sort of crazy inverted security.

Shouldn't be a problem if your username and password are correctly paired. I'm trying to remember what happened to me: I think I changed the password in the site email admin, for some reason the POP server picked it up but the SMTP server(s) missed it. After an abortive attempt a describing the problem to CS, I reset the password at the main site and then it worked OK for both.

Re: Orphanned email Account
I had a similar problem with my email, I ended up reseting my password online and it worked ok after that.

Hi there, Vic
Looks like our old thread has been hijacked with all sorts of e-mail issues.
Well as regards Orphaned E-mail accounts.
I'm still waiting, you know the old
Seven Working Days
classic
I'm just going to keep trying after this magic interval
In all likelyhood I will just have to start moving all registrations etc attached to those e-mails to some new reliable ones like Yahoo or something.

Re: Orphanned email Account
I had a very useful discussion with Virgin customer service; Donna was very helpful.....ticket number 5142225 refers.
As the initiator of this thread you will note that I have been unable to access the pop3 mail server since 9th July.
I also discovered today whilst investigating my connections that I had an email address unknown to me.
It turned out that when I moved home and changed to a new account in December 2009 my original email address held since 2001 was NOT migrated. In fact a mistake was made and three email addresses not known to me were allocated to my current account on 1st May 2008.
I have been assured that "IT" will complete the migration process on or before 15th August so I will have to be patient and continue to use the web mail service.
I hope this helps other fellow sufferers!

Re: Orphanned email Account
Well the 15th August deadline has almost passed.....looks Virgin have forgotten me. No solution yet to this problem that started on 9th July....so it's back on the phone tomorrow for another frustrating experience.

Re: Orphanned email Account
Well I called 151 today and had a pretty unsatisfactory telephone discussion. The Virgin nperson told me it would take another month or two to complete the migration and add my email address to the pop3 server! He did agree that the case number 5242225 was not an IT ticket number and he was unable to give the relevent IT Ticket number. He did say that the IT team should be able to access their ticket number from the customer servcies case number files.
HELP HELP HELP please.

(no doubt shortly to be orphaned unexpectedly) accounts to....
GMAIL
Because GMail allows Pop download on Outlook Express and GMail shouldn't be such a rollercoaster of a journey as I have had with ntlworld over the years.
In fact since ntlworld/virginmedia have moved to use GMail, in a way I'm just cutting out the middle man.
So BenMcr do you still have that blind faith that ntl/virginmedia will sort it out int the end?....
Cause I certainly lost my faith in ntl/virginmedia when it comes to providing a reliable e-mail service.!!
