RDNS of pop3.ntlworld.com

I was just wondering if anyone knows why the RDNS of
pop3.ntlworld.com seems to point to a customer record. I got a bit worried when my client told me it was connecting to cpc1-mfld1-5-0-cust206.nott.cable.ntl.com to download e-mail.

pop3.ntlworld.com -> 62.254.26.206

62.254.26.206 -> cpc1-mfld1-5-0-cust206.nott.cable.ntl.com

very weird

Re: RDNS of pop3.ntlworld.com

Given thats its an old cable.ntl.com address, id say its an old RDNS entry that needs updating.

The are plenty of addresses with both NTL and Telewest in them when you do a whois search.

I did it the easy way http://tools.virginmedia.com/

He knows that.

What he's saying is that if you ask "what is the DNS address registered to this IP?" you get a customer DNS record rather that it returning pop3.ntlworld.com.

In other words the forward and reverse DNS records for the IP do not match.

They all resolve to NTL/Virginmedia and are valid so nothing to worry about.

Depends on the application your running, certain applicaitons depend on the rDNS being accurate. It may be resolving to the correct domain, but it's resolving to the wrong host within that domain.
