Any Recent Configuration Changes on smtp.ntlworld.com?

After a couple of hours of head-scratching I thought I'd ask the question...

Since my ntlworld email account was migrated to the new platform I've been successfully using my wi-fi Palm PDA to access my email whilst at home. A couple of weeks ago I lost the ability to send via smtp.ntlworld.com although this had previously been working. I checked my settings and there appears to be nothing wrong (server: smtp.ntlworld.com, smtp authentication enabled using my .....@ntlworld account and the correct password, SSL enabled, Port:465). Whenever I attempt to send mail the PDA times-out, saying there is no response from the smtp server. To reiterate, this is when I am connected via wi-fi to my router at home, which is connected to Virgin Media (cable). I have checked and double-checked the settings and can see no problem (laptops in the house work properly with the same settings).

The one thing that did occur to me was that Versamail (the Palm POP3 client) cant connect to Gmail over port 465 (it does work with port 587), unfortunately port 587 on smtp.ntlworld.com has the same problem.

I can't use VM webmail as, unlike Gmail it lacks a simple way to directly access it via a mobile-friendly page.

I do have a solution to the problem-I send via smtp.gmail.com (I have my Gmail account associated with my ntlworld account so messages appear to com from my ntlworld account), but I'm just rather confused

Perhaps once the ntlworld smtp server is migrated fully to the gmail platform I'll be able to use port 587 to connect to that one (and I'll be able to use it from wherever I happen to be????)

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

try turning off smtp authentication, this seems to work if you're using Outlook clients such as 2007 and 2010

Re: Any Recent Configuration Changes on smtp.ntlworld.com?

I've tried disabling authentication, but no joy. I'm guessing there must be some kind of client checking going on, and my Palm client is on the "no entry" list. It would seem that VM haven't implemented the Gmail platform in full, as using port 587 sorts the same problem there.

Even when the smtp.ntlworld.com server is fully migrated to google (which it isn't at the moment) it will still be on port 465 as far as I'm aware.

Re: Any Recent Configuration Changes on smtp.ntlworld.com?

We will only use 465 for SMTP on @ntlworld.com the same as on all the other platforms that fall under the Virginmedia umbrella such as @blueyonder.co.uk, @virginmedia.com and @virgin.net, the will be no other changes.

Re: Any Recent Configuration Changes on smtp.ntlworld.com?

Thanks for the replies-it's not a major problem as I have a workaround using the gmail smtp server when sending from my PDA that works fine. I wondered when the migration of the ntlworld smtp servers to the gmail platform might be completed-will it then be possible to send via smtp.ntlworld.com from anywhere using authentication with Outlook Express?

I too have been having problems with this and am pretty peeved off to be honest! Thanks to the person who suggested unticking the authentication tickbox, that did the trick for me.

Really surprised VM havent done something about this to inform customers, instead their website still gives incorrect instructions :S
