Virgin media SMTP settings

I'm setting up an free web hosting account for my father due to his current one changing from free to pay. Anyway whilst setting up the email i noticed it says the following:
Outgoing (SMTP) server: you need to use your ISP (Internet Service Provider) SMTP server.

So can i use the blueyonder/virgin media SMTP settings in order to get outgoing mail and if so where do i find these settings or will i not be able to use virgin's SMTP server?

thanks

Re: Virgin media SMTP settings

Nope, the VM SMTP server is only available on a VM connection. The free web host should have it's own SMTP server that you can use, or use webmail..

Re: Virgin media SMTP settings

The Blueyonder, Virgin.net and Virginmedia.com servers can be used with a Virgin Media e-mail address on any ISP - as long as they don't block it. You need to sign into the SMTP servers using the Virgin e-mail address and password

This was enabled as part of the e-mail migration to the Google platform

The ntlworld.com smtp is the only one that doesn't allow it yet.

Re: Virgin media SMTP settings

Basically happened at the same time as the introduction of SSL and the 'other' ports. Part of the reason for these settings is to allow off-net access to the servers.

So @virginmedia.com e-mail address customers have always been able to do so

@virgin.net customers gained the ability end of last year when they were migrated to the Google platform

@blueyonder.co.uk customers got it earlier this year

@ntlworld.com customers will get it later this year once the SMTP server is migrated to google - unfortunately there is no way to enable it on the current server.

Re: Virgin media SMTP settings

So if i use the same SMTP settings that i have for my blueyonder account i can get outgoing emails??

I would use the web hosts SMTP but because its free website hosting i use they only allow me to get incoming emails and i was informed to use my ISP's SMTP server if i wanted to get outgoing emails.

Yes - although I would set him up with seperate e-mail address as the sending e-mail is attached to each mail sent. So if you use your setttings, your e-mail will be sent
