Make Sure Your Email Keeps Working

An Email currently from Virgin Media is being sent out called Important information about your blueyonder email service.

Just wondered if this affects customers that use Microsoft Outlook and or Firefox?

Reason for asking is I can't get the page to load due to high demand I would imagine.

Message below which has a Fix My Email button.

Hello

This information is important if you use an email program like Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird to access your email.

Due to an upgrade to our email service, you need to make a few small changes to make sure your email program keeps working. We have created a tool to do this for you automatically, or you can make the changes manually if you prefer.

Running the tool here only takes a few seconds, and you don't need to stop what you're doing or re-boot your PC. However, you need to be on your home PC for these changes to take effect in Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird. Making these changes will ensure that you won't have problems sending and receiving emails in the future, when we switch off some of our old email systems.

Want to check this is a genuine email?

It’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for internet fraudsters. Check this is a genuine email from us by going to virginmedia.com, visiting the Help area via the link at the top right of the screen, and under Hot Topics you will find a link to Email settings change.

These changes are related to the launch of a new service, Virgin Media Mail, based on Google technology, which is now available to anyone who has a virgin.net, ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk or virginmedia.com email address. Take a look on our website for more information.

Find out more

You can also find out a bit more about it before running the tool here. We recommend you check out this information if you don't use Internet Explorer as your main browser, if you use a mail programme other than Outlook Express, Thunderbird or Windows Mail, if you use a non-personalised blueyonder username such as at003c6326, or if you would prefer to follow manual instructions rather than running the tool.

Hi VMboy sounds right but haven't had an email myself. There is a migration going on that will require you to change your settings. The new settings will be as follows:

Sending mail (SMTP)

SMTP server name: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
SMTP SSL: Enabled
SMTP port: 465
SMTP authentication: Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
SMTP username: Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@blueyonder.co.uk

Receiving mail (POP3)

POP3 server name: pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
POP3 SSL: Enabled
POP3 port: 995
POP3 authentication: Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)
POP3 username: Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@blueyonder.co.uk
POP3 SPA (Secure Password Authentication): Disabled

Could be worth ditching all email programs and sticking with the webmail, less hassle that way

Just checked an haven't received that email myself yet.

I still don't know what I need to do, oh yes it's working now, but I am afraid that won't be the case when the old servers have been switched off.

Do the pop3 servers need changing? and I read somewhere about port 995 although I don't know if this is for both incoming and outgoing?

If you read the second post that has the settings that will be in effect after migration.

pop3.blueyonder.co.uk is port 995 and smtp.blueyonder.co.uk is port 465 with ssl boxes ticked and using full email address for username.

Wouldn't bother changing them just yet though if it is still working but you could wait till the help pages are working again as the tool you had a link to in the email is also on the site. Download it from there just to be on the safe side and avoid downloading something dodgy if that email is not genuine

just updated Windows Mail (yes same settings as Microsoft Outlook) with the new settings on my email address and all emails coming through all ok. Still have partners and children's emails on old settings and their still working. So you can change them whenever you want.

How do we change it to full email address for username?

Is the username the same as the account name?

I have an account name plus an alias I created, and the alias works off the account name as far as I am aware.

Re: Make Sure Your Email Keeps Working

use your full email address in the account name.

example:

currently you will have

account name: aa000a0000 (made up but using same syntax)
password: *********

change this to your full email address joebloggs@blueyonder.co.uk

account name: joebloggs@blueyonder.co.uk
password: *********

Oh I see, you mean change the account name which started with a couple of letters and some numbers and then add the blueyonder.co.uk to it?

And also change the server ports to 995 and 465 respectively.

And do you know if we need to check the boxes for secure password authentication, and also the box for my server requires authentication?

Also there are boxes in advanced for this server requires a secure connection for both in and outgoing SSL.

Re: Make Sure Your Email Keeps Working

I received the email saying i have to follow the link to still get my blueyonder email. I am on windows 7 and the message says to change it manually. The instructions to do that are as clear as mud. Can anyone help? I have linked my blueyonder account to my hotmail account to access my mail. Will this still work if I don't change anything?

No wonder I feel depressed each time I visit this forum, I got this email with a "fix email" link and when I click the link I just get a web page with manual instructions. Where's the tool then?

You do know this forum is not owned by Virgin Media, don't you?

As such, what has this forum got to do with it?

Didn't work for me using virgin's guidelines for outlook express. Used Window Live to connect to my email instead, just entered email and password and it downloaded all my email.
