New Virginmedia Email Rules

Just thought you'd be interested to know Virginmedia have increased the security on the email platform and selfcare platforms and thus your password now needs to be between 6-10 characters long.

If you have a password shorter than this, it needs to be reset.

Correct as of 28/03/2008

You may have to ring in to have your password changed, but ask for the call charges to be credited to your account as it will be Administration on the account.

Technical support number 0906 212 1111

It actually gets worse, you cannot set up an email address now with less than 6 characters, so if you delete a legacy email that is less than 6 letters long you loose it.

Re: New Virginmedia Email Rules

I took the password offered when the email was set up - which was one letter plus nine numeric anyway.
I also note that the email account naming required a number now as well - even though the name may be unique.
So more importantly, if you delete an account with a name - you might not get the same one back.

Re: New Virginmedia Email Rules

Are you sure? Because last month I tried to set up a e-mail address shorter than the six chars and it wouldn't let me - it was also being a pain about demanding a longer password. This was for a @ntlworld.com address.

Re: New Virginmedia Email Rules

This is a cross platform issue as EX-NTL already had this in place, this is part of the resolution of amalgamating both platforms to ensure both EX-NTL and EX-Telewest are basically singing from the same song sheet.

Wink To create a password that you will remember!

Was given this idea to create a password - which is very secure , please feel free to use it!!!

first think of a song or poem but one you know VERY well .
O k think of the first line now think of a date.

What you then do is this

Song "Ive got you babe" date 2008

first 2 numbers, first line of song last 2 numbers

giving pass word

20Ivegotyourtoholdmyhand08

Re: New Virginmedia Email Rules

There are lot's of schemes around.

Firefox has a plugin that will generate passwords for you and then use a master password phrase to protect the store in firefox.

Use a simple noddy sort of password for sites where you don't care too much about being hacked. Having that simple, single password means you get in easily, only have to remember that one password and a pass phrase to get to your others. Make that simple one unrelated to any others though.

Think of a phrase
England expects every man to do his duty!

Replace to with 2 and so on
England expects every man 2 do his duty!

Use initial letters
Eeem2dhd!

Futher substitute letters with digits and punctuation
E3£m2d4d!

Overall the rule is easy to remember, hard to guess
