NTL and Telivo hosting issues

Hi People, I've spent a few hours reading all the posts on this forum and havent really found a complete answer to my problem.

Okay...............

My website is hosted on my free webspace that came with my broadband connection, I use NTL, because I didn't much like the rubbish address it would then have, I bought a domain from Telivo, It had the option to set up masked web forwarding, fantastic...................... so I vaguely recall setting it up (not sure where the web forwarding details/address stuff came from), worked just fine, no problems at all

BUT

Well I ran out of space!
So because my domain name was up for renewel, I took the oportunity to renew it and then add on hosting with Telivo.

I had the genius (not) plan of leaving the web redirection on, So leaving the current site on the free space with NTL and spend some time making a new site using oscommerce on my new Telivo webspace! then when I'm ready ditch the old website and use my domain name for the new website on the Telivo hosting!

Well I'm having a few problems...............

The Domain renewel and additional hosting has activated just fine..........
But its deleated my existing web forwarding settings, now my domain name links just to a telivo holding page, I can get to my website the long way

In the Telivo control pannel, the box I had before I bought hosting had a web forwarding option, but now thats gone! The only thing that sounded remotely possible was the DNS bit, but TBH I really don't want to mess this all up, I'm not certain what the DNS bit does or means, and also to change the DNS you need an IP but I dont know what it might be?

I'd be really grateful if someone could help me

Re: NTL and Telivo hosting issues

you upgraded to a hosting account, this normally wipes out any web forwarding settings as it is no longer parked as such but is a full hosting account

either upload the site to the telivo servers or downgrade to just a domain only and have the web forwarding put back onto your account

Re: NTL and Telivo hosting issues

Personally id do this:

Setup an "A" record in the DNS settings at Telivo, point this to the IP of your VM Web Server - if you are unsure, check any control panels you have.

You can then work on your Telivo Site and the just remove the A record once ready.

Let me know if you get stuck.

You can't point directly at the VM webserver as its not an exclusive public IP per directory, you'll probably have to use some redirect in your hosting code.

Re: NTL and Telivo hosting issues

Hmm bugger..

A 301 Redirect would be usefull - but would have to be PHP or htaccess - depends on the platform at your new host end.

Re: NTL and Telivo hosting issues

Or ideally, move the content across to your hosting directory and remember to change all the linked pages.

You'll have more scripting options no doubt, and perhaps have a chance to create some more dynamic content.

A fun but frustrating project I'm sure.
