Can't receive Hotmail attachments

My friend and I are both on NTL email. Just recently we have both had problems receiving attachments from Hotmail a/cs. When I receive photos, I can't see the photos but the size of the email (eg 2.1MB) indicates that the photo is there somewhere. I'm using AVG & ZoneAlarm.

My friend is using Avast and gets a warning message -
From: <avast! 4>
Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2008 11:06
Subject: [avast! heuristic - WARNING]
> Multiple Content-Type header - HIGH DANGER!

Anybody else experiencing this?

Regards.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

Hi, I'm getting this same problem but it isn't just affecting emails coming from hotmail accounts. It seems that any attachment over 500KB approx is stripped from the email and inserted into the message body as MIME code. I've contacted Virgin Media support but they just blamed my internet explorer settings although I am aware of other people with this problem.

Anyone else raised this with Virgin Media and what response did you get?

Dave

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

Hi Dave. Disappointing that no other cases have been reported. My friend & I (Surrey/Hampshire) can both receive attachments from non-Hotmail accounts so a bit different from you. But I've just sent a small photo file from my Hotmail a/c to my NTL one & that came through OK.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

Discovered the same problem last night.

I ordered a PDF manual for my laptop. The email reply said that the manual was attached, but there was no attachment. So I went to my own Googlemail account & tried sending some emails to my ntlworld accounts (I've got 4 of them). Only attachments under approx. 360kB were received. The others just didn't appear at all.

The same happened when I tried sending attachments from my Yahoo account.

There were no problems when sending an attachment from one ntlworld account to another. Also there were no problems when sending attachments from Google or Yahoo to my freeserve account, which I receive via my VM connection.

I sent myself another email a few minutes ago from my Google address and picked it up via VM webmail, and the attachment was there. So it is only when Outlook Express downloads the email from the webmail that the problem occurs.

I am running AVG & Zone Alarm Pro. I turned them both off before trying again this morning, but still got the same results.

Did you send the bmp from a Google, Yahoo or Hotmail address?

But did you send it from a Hotmail a/c to your NTL a/c? I'm using AVG & Spamfighter, but my friend isn't using either of those.

I've just done the same from my Hotmail a/c, attaching a 1.5MB photo file & picked it up OK in my NTL webmail no problem.

How does one complain to Virgin re this? Is it only via the premium rate phone line?

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

I am going to try to contact them by email
I know everyone says it's a waste of time, but I've never tried it before, so I'll give it a bash.

Meanwhile I've set my ntl account in OE to leave a copy of the message on the server. I hope that doing that will leave the original message with the attachment intact on the server, so I can pick it up using web mail.

I contacted the place that sold me my laptop PDF manual, & they re-sent it to my Googlemail address, complete with attachment.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

Did you have any success please???

Just noticed the same problem. Not receiving any attachments be them jpeg or doc. Spoke to Hotline and they reckon it's nothing to do with them. Gave me another to phone ( 09069910001 ) PC Lined whoever they are?

Ntl webmail is ok but as this is happening on 2 pcs', one with oe and avg and the other with outlook and mcafee, surely it's got to be at their end/

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks & regards John

I've just had this reply -

I've gone back to them saying that it's their service I'm complaining about. That I know of several people on this forum (I gave the link) affected by it. I don't expect a useful reply from whoever it is that doesn't even know he's meant to enter his name.

Gordon.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

Thanks Gordon.

I spoke to them this afternoon and ended up spending a quid-a-minute only to be told to download Adaware 2007 which I did and all that found was a load of Cookies with the problem still there.

The helpdesks seem to be adopting the stance that as the emails+attachments go ok into webmail then the problem is at the users' end.

I don't necessarily go along with this as webmail is internet based and really that does'nt prove a thing.

Phoning them again tomorrow to see if they will check their email logs ( if their helpdesk is where I think it is they'll probably think I'm taking about a tree !).

John

Am pursuing other avenues and will get back asap.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

I only got round to emailing VM a little while ago. It looks like I will be getting the same stock answer from "Mr/Mrs. Your Name".

They say they wont help because they only provide support to the services they endorse. Says a lot for their own email service then.

Re: Can't receive Hotmail attachments

The problem is lies with Exchange Server 2007 and Outlook 2003. They do not seem to be compatible - thanks microsoft.

More information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930468/

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=935999

Looks like you'll have to upgrade to 2007. Fortunately I already have Office 2007 but preferred 2003.

If it were'nt for the fact it'd cost me £1/min I'd gladly pass this info onto Virgin's so called HELPdesk. In fact, tempted to ask for my money back by giving me wrong information.

Regards John

John - I've checked, I'm using Outlook Express 6 and don't think I have Exchange Server 2007. So I'm not sure you're right when you say that's where the problem lies. I can still receive attachments from non-Hotmail accounts. Anyway, I''l see if I can upgrade Outlook Express; I guess there may be a free upgrade on the MS site?
