Domain name with Broadband

I have Virgin Media broadband internet so my email address is with them. When I sell my house and move to an area without Virgin I will have to give up my email address with Virgin which I have had for several years. This would be very inconvenient.

What can I do to prevent such a huge upheavel?

Can I get a domain name now and use it with my present system? Could I get a Domain name which I could take with me wherever I go whereby all emails are routed through that company and on to me whatever ISP Provider I choose?

Please advise.

One of the easiest solutions, at no real cost to you would be to get an email account such as gmail, hotmail or whatever, that is not dependent on any ISP.

An alternative is to register a domain, but that is then going to incur you in the expense of some form of hosting service, even a basic one, so that you can send and receive email. The Virgin Media webspace / hosting facility doesn't support that properly. You can redirect your domain webspace to your Virgin Media website I believe - not tried it myself. The email would have to forward, incoming to your VM account, by which time you might just as well have connected to your own hosting service. A workaround might be to use a third party domain control system such as zonedit, to control forwarding of a single email account from your domain.

I have my domain with http://www.lcn.biz/ which offer a free fowarding service, so you can recieve any mail from joe @ bloggs.com to any e-mail you like.

Problem is, without hosting, any mail sent back out would arrive as from joebloggs @ mailprovider.com

I agree with what Rob says, if you end up paying for a domain, you might as well spend a little bit extra a month and get hosted e-mail. Much more flexible

http://www.1and1.co.uk are very cheap for that. Apparently its usually 69p per month which is £9 per year (and from £2.99 for the domain)

Or you could use gmail for domains or windows live domains for free (well the cost per year of your domain)
