Unhappy Something not right with my website.

I need some help from you good people,

I have uploaded all my website files using the built in ftp in Front page 2003. It was really easy. Whilst transfering the files to the remote server a window appeared stating that some of the files will be in conflict and will not be uploaded - if I continue to upload anyway the files will be overwriten. These files in conflict are:

borders/bottom.htm
borders/top.htm
about.htm
join.htm
faq.htm
links.htm

I decided to upload and then see my site. When I got to the home page I couldn`t see my links, nav bars or any pictures and the whole site is in chaos. A complete mess. I don`t get it. I did everything right and it looked perfect whilst I was creating it. My ISP can`t help me. I have frontpage extensions enabled too.

Re: Something not right with my website.

Have you completely wiped your current website so you are starting from a fresh complete upload?

---------- Post added at 14:56 ---------- Previous post was at 14:44 ----------

Okay, I`ve deleted all my files in the remote server and started again. i`ve gone to my home page and still can`t see the navigation nor any images and some text boxes are overlapping each other.

Re: Something not right with my website.

If you look at the website locally on your computer, by pointing your Internet Explorer at it (don't go through Forntpage), presumably that shows the site correctly?

Assuming that is the case. wipe the entire site on the webserver and try again.

Is this Virgin Media webspace you are using, or somethign hosted elsewhere? I'm wondering if you have used a frontpage function that isn't supported (maybe the webspace expects frontpage 20000, rather than 2003). Is the site entirely html, or have you tried to be clever and ussed something not supported?

May be wrong.. but sounds like it's file paths that are wrong.

Yes, I`ve done that in Firefox and IE7 but no change. My other pages are okay except for a text box with some links inside it that don`t work on one page (my links page) and another page (my home page) that has no nav bar, no links and no images. My home page is titled .../index.htm - that`s what Ive been told to name it so I guess that`s okay.

---------- Post added at 15:09 ---------- Previous post was at 15:07 ----------

The server I use does only use frontpage 2000 and they`ve told me that frontpage 2003 is fully compatible. And the server extensions are fully up to date.

If FP 2003 is not compatible with the servers 2000 version how come all the other pages are okay except for my home page?

---------- Post added at 15:19 ---------- Previous post was at 15:09 ----------

On the home page the nav bar is missing and a Gif. image. Also a text box is misaligned.

On another page the sanme nav bar is NOt missing and the same gif. image is NOT missing. The same text box is misaligned.

On another page I have used a text box with links inside it that have not shown up as links but just text.

My home page is titled ...blueyonder.co.uk/index.htm

In the ftp window on the left hand side it states that some gif.images are "unmatched".

In my computer when I look at the home page I can`t see my nav bar links - could this be the problem?

---------- Post added at 15:27 ---------- Previous post was at 15:19 ----------

Okay, what I`ve done is edited the home page on my computer and reinserted a nav bar with buttons and links. I saved it and republished it uisng the ftp in frontpage.

The links have appeared! Hooooray! but the buttons have not. Also the gif image is still not there.

Re: Something not right with my website.

defo sounds like the file route is wrong on your server.

For instance:

say your web server route to your page file is- ....co.uk/public_html/index.htm
and your images route is - ....co.uk/public_html/images/navbar.jpg

If on your pc, your route to your website is C:/...Desktop/mywebsite/index.htm
and you images route is- C:/...Desktop/mywebsite/navbar.jpg

this means the routes are different so the internet is looking in the place you are telling it to look, yet you have told it the wrong file path.

Sorry- Im not very good at explaining things like this.. i'd be better showing you if you give me the html coding, or send me a link to a page of your site.

Re: Something not right with my website.

Hmmm. The error appears on uploading the files, so it cannot be anything to do with HTTP requests and file paths. Could just be that the FTP client (or even the server) is not creating folders correctly, so the files end up in the wrong folders (or overwrite existing files).

Sorry; maybe ive misunderstood this thread.

If this is the case, then maybe the directories somehow have the wrong read/ write permissions?

Re: Something not right with my website.

If the server is Linux then check the CaPiTaLiSaTiOn is right. Index.htm and index.htm are two different names.

Re: Something not right with my website.

Ex Telewest (ie blueyonder) servers are linux so case does matter. However that does not explain the original error. Could you post the entire error message? Have you tried uploading with a standalone FTP client rather than from front page?
