Cannot connect to webproxy using port 80

I have been a Virgin/NTL customer for over a year now and have had no problems using proxy servers up until recently. I was just wondering why I am unable to connect to a web proxy using Port 80?, all the other ports that I use for proxies work fine but the connection speed is seriously reduced using other port addresses. Does this affect other VirginMedia customers aswell?. It's very annoying and I maybe forced to change ISP's if i cannot resolve this issue.

You don't appear to be using a proxy. Why do you want to, or is it just that had to until recently?

Hi to everyone in the cable forum

I have had problems with hackers in the past my PC has been hacked countless times and have suffered flood attacks. I have complained to NTL but i never received a response or its the usual reply "use a firewall", the VirginMedia customer support service is poor IMHO. Since then I have always used a proxy mainly for security reasons. I have Netguard Firewall AntiVirus etc none of that seems to keep the hackers out.

Re: Cannot connect to webproxy using port 80

What are you doing to attract "hackers" ?

How does using a proxy stop them ? What "security" reasons ?

I don't know why I am attracting hackers who knows?

using a proxy makes it harder for them to track my movements on teh interweb

I don't like being spied onto every site I visit

I have searched everywhere, I remember coming across a webpage saying something about some Cable companys don't allow customers to connect through port 80 Proxy Web Servers so I figured coming here I might get an answer lol.......obviously not.

Re: Cannot connect to webproxy using port 80

Many well written websites can tell when you are using a proxy, and are capable of reading past that proxy back to your own IP. So a proxy doesn't necessarily hide you.

Presumably, since you are that paranoid about security, you don't even allow cookies?

If you are getting hacked, it sounds to me like you have something wrong with your basic setup, like you are actually downloading and installing malware. Either that or you are visiting sites and invoilved in such nefarious activities yourself

Most users will find themselves more than adequately protected, by installing decent antivirus, a firewall, and spyware. Adding a router also helps a lot as most of those include firewalls, provided you don't open loads of ports that increases difficulty of anyone to penetrate you. And of course, don't open emails from sources you don't trust - they inevitably contains something dodgy, and avoid downloads of dodgy torrent type files.

When someone hacks your PC and changes system registry settings and recovers files you thought you deleted 6 months ago, thats a good enough reason to be paranoid IMO lol . It all happened when I joined a gaming server suppose someone must have used the same port I was accessing the MPORG with.
