Sorry - didn't know that us members had an SLA to answer questions from newbies within 15 mins of posting.

Welcome BTW

I'd suggest that you go and double check the connections - looks like a mess-up somewhere.

Re: telephone extension

Do you have any other phones in the house connected - there used to be an issue, back in the day, that more than 3 or 4 phones caused the symptoms you are describing, due to REN limitations.

From the BT site (but probably valid for VM et al)
Quote:
How many pieces of equipment do you have plugged into the line?.
If you have more than 4 telephones or other pieces of equipment plugged in, you may have exceeded your lineĀ“s REN. REN stands for Ringing Equivalence Number.
Most telephones and faxes have a REN of 1, although some older pieces of equipment can have a REN of 3. REN refers to the electricity supply sent to your telephone from the local exchange. On BT lines, enough current is supplied to power devices up to a total REN of 4.
To check if this is the problem, unplug all your equipment, and plug it back in again, one by one, until you locate which device is exceeding your REN limit. If this is the cause of the problem, you could buy an extension booster, which will boost the REN of your line.

Re: telephone extension

How old is the downstairs phone (and its REN), and don't forget answering machines count on the REN count.

Try the BT troubleshooting advice in my link above.
