Help with phone sockets required!

Hi I wonder if anyone can help!?

I have 2 white phone sockets in my property, one in the living room and the other in the bedroom. I tested both sockets: the living room socket had a dial tone and the internet is also plugged into that connection without problem. The socket in the bed room had no dial tone. I removed this box from the wall and cut the wires. However i no longer have any dial tone in the living room or internet connection!

- Can anyone advise on what work needs to be done?

- Whether it’s best to call my provider (Talk Talk) to get this fixed?

- And how much it is likely to cost?

Thanking you in advance.

Danielle

Re: Help with phone sockets required!

Which socket was the master socket?

If you get internet via the phone sockets, i.e. ADSL, to get a dial tone from the phone an ADSL splitter is often needed wherever the phone is plugged in. Hence no dial tone in the other room when you tested.

You will need to identify, and hope that you haven't cut the wire that leads from the street to the master socket. If you ahve done that you are in for an expensive repair as you'll need to ask talk talk to get the BT engineers in to renew that cable. You might be able to do a temporary join, but it will be a bodge. Strictly speaking the wire from the street to the master socket and the master socket itself shouldn't be touched by you. You can however make alterations to your extensions sockets and cables, and most master sockets have a front cover that is removable by the consumer to allow exgtension connections, leaving the main, or test, socket visible in the main box behind.

Re: Help with phone sockets required!

Hi Rob

Many thanks for your reply.

I have read about master sockets on this thread: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/93...t-removal.html

I will have to have a look at home tonight to see if the other socket is the master socket or not.

Just to clarify could i get an independent engineer to fix it (would that be more cost effective...) or would i have to go through talk talk? How much roughly would i been looking at shelling out?

Many thanks again

Re: Help with phone sockets required!

I think the fee is £160.00 for an engineer to fix it. Could be wrong though

Re: Help with phone sockets required!

Many thanks for all of your replies, I think it does look like the master socket was the socket we took off of the wall, here are photos of the remaining box:

If so, is possible to connect a new cable from outside to this socket? Any idea how much time this would take (quotes i have recieved have been in hourly rates)?

Thanking you in advance.
