Can I get 2 internet providers in 1 home ?

Hi.

My parents and I currently use BT Broadband and it's great, however I now have a problem.

My family now seem to think it's a good idea to sign up to some other company that provides gas/electricity/broadband all in 1 (I don't know what company, I assume it will be awful broadband with limitations etc).

My question is:

If my family switch to this new company/service (not BT, so not a BT line I guess? forgive me...I know nothing about networking) can I get a seperate BT phone line installed in my room & pay for BT broadband myself ?

So downstairs my family would use the cruddy internet and upstairs I would use my own BT Broadband, so 2 ISP's and 2 phone lines in 1 home.

Is this possible ? Please advise.

Thank you so much.

If they allowed it you'd end up paying the full install charge as they'd have to string up a new wire to the house.

Is VM not in your area??

Unfortunately not, our exchange hasn't been upgraded with all the new stuff ! I'm stuck with the "up to 8mb" rubbish but to be honest it's good enough for me.

I don't mind paying the full install charge, I have a full time job so it's not a problem.

So are you saying it can be done ? or possibly not ?

If it was done, would I be charged "line rental" as well as the broadband service cost ? I wont be using a telephone on the line, just broadband...

Cheers for responding.

As well as the install cost for the second line, and the monthly fee for a second broadband service... which by the sounds of it if you are on a "non-unbundled" exchange may be costly!

For ADSL to work currently you require an active BT (or resellers) phone line, naked DSL isn't an option in the UK at the moment unfortunately.

The best thing to do is ring a new provider and ask them!
Because your with BT make sure you find a provider than uses BT to run there Broadband lines off

Re: Can I get 2 internet providers in 1 home ?

I believe that due to the technology used, each line can only carry one ADSL connection. As such, wether the original poster is with BT or not, he or she will need a second line for a second ADSL connection, so can go to whichever provider is offering the best deal.

Is it Utilitywarehouse?
https://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/Home/broadcall/

Can't find any reference to doing the whole lot bundled though, it's Gas & Electricity, and it's Phone and Broadband

Re: Can I get 2 internet providers in 1 home ?

They arent bad from what Ive heard. They aren't a large provider by ant stretch of the imagination but the last time i checked I'm sure they were unlimited and employed no traffic shaping either. If you can get an LLU product from them then they should be a good bet, have you checked what's available on your local exchange?

Er confused here, why do you think the broadband will be cruddy downstairs? all cruddy adsl runs off the same line, doesn't really matter if you're with bt/sky/tiscali/talk talk/ etc etc they're all going to be the same just with their own set of rules. the only way it would be any different is if you had bt broadband and bt infinity or bt broadband and virgin media

Well, think of Virgin Media's ADSL service. It's terrible. Why? Because they limit the hell out of it and oversell it. Their cable service on the other hand, I quite like. The point is, you can still have a terrible service on ADSL without it being due to a bad line.

Openreach will happily install multiple lines providing there is sufficient line plant availability in the area.

I currently have 2 phonelines with a bonded DSL service operating on them.
