Orange 3G iPhone service in London - DO NOT USE!

Orange 3G fails in London and refuses to acknowledge issues - although they state that they have the largest 3G network in the UK (just been proven false) I believe they have the worst 3G service, when you can get a signal it is often very slow.. so slow in fact that it times out just loading a google map. I have tested both Vodafone and o2 and they are consistently better.

"Data rates
ITU has not provided a clear definition of the data rate users can expect from 3G equipment or providers. Thus users sold 3G service may not be able to point to a standard and say that the rates it specifies are not being met. While stating in commentary that "it is expected that IMT-2000 will provide higher transmission rates: a minimum data rate of 2 Mbit/s for stationary or walking users, and 384 kbit/s in a moving vehicle,"[16] the ITU does not actually clearly specify minimum or average rates or what modes of the interfaces qualify as 3G, so various rates are sold as 3G intended to meet customers expectations of broadband data." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G

As stated before at work (Baker Street London) If I manage to get a 3G signal am consistantly getting about 17kbps download and 51kbps upload I should be getting 2Mbits (collegues of mine are getting over 2Mbits on vodaphone and O2 networks on the same phone)

At home SE22 Dulwich I am getting a little faster about 60Kbits but as you know this is appalling I cant even send and recieve emails or view web pages etc

Even though my service is not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act and my new contract should be deemed valid for termination under the 14day legislation - Orange refuse to acknowledge this and refuse to allow my contract to be terminated even though I cannot use it's services properly.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I found out the expensive way - as a word of warning I would recommend never using Orange in London if you want a reliable 3g service.

So because one person has problems the rest of us who's never had a problem with 3g in London should go elsewhere... Sorry but this sound like sour grapes to me

LOL, so if Baker street has a bad signal that means the whole of London has a crap signal!!!

It all depends where the masts are, its pot luck

Re: Orange 3G iPhone service in London - DO NOT USE!

Orange has a bad 3G signal in several areas tested through my friends phone. Right from areas in North London, South London, Central London and West London... i will say their 2G signal is great but from this experience all i can say is stay clear from Orange 3G.

Re: Orange 3G iPhone service in London - DO NOT USE!

This is interesting.

I've been having 3G problems with my phone and although it was regional, I thought it was the phone (HTC Desire) as others had the same. Could well be the network then.

I get good reception in East London but North and Central London are very hit and miss.

Also Orange have not been and won't be for a while be the largest 3G network, as confirmed by Ofcom, Hutchison 3G is the largest, Orange are allowed to get away with this misleading claim by counting the amount of customers they have and the amount of 3G masts they have.

Orange think by putting one mast in each town is enough to cover the whole area and be reliable. So by placing a 3G mast in every town gives them the ability to mislead. 3 have a wider 3G coverage and has now merged with T-Mobile's.

As of 1st July 2010, Everything Everywhere became active and is now the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK. It is not yet possible for Orange customers to use 3/T-Mobile's 3G network and it is not yet possible for Orange customers to roam across T-Mobile's nor is possible for T-Mobile and Virgin customers to roam across Orange.

3 customers recieve the widest 3G coverage and also recieve Orange's 2G coverage, therefore once the merge between Orange and T-Mobile is fully complete, 3 customers will get the benefit of 3 different networks.

Everything Everywhere will be forced to sell off some of its spectrum and the likely buyers will possibly be Hutchison 3G or an independent company such as BT. This is for competition reasons as Vodafone,Hutchison 3G and BT have complained about Everything Everywhere becoming to large.
