High attenuation yet 2km from exchange
Hi guys, I have a puzzle running through my head regarding an ADSL connection that's not right, and I'm trying to piece it together.
The attenuation on this line is quite high - 56db on the downstream. The SNR Margin is 6db. The line is very newly installed by BT, the internet service provider is Tiscali through a reseller, and the connection is ADSL2+ Annex M.
On a separate note the CRC errors on the router are slowly creeping up at regular intervals, and there's next to no data going through.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
TIA.
TM

Re: High attenuation yet 2km from exchange
How have you arrived at the conclusion that your line length is 2km? I have 60 (occasionally 61) on mine and it's more than 6km.

Re: High attenuation yet 2km from exchange
Put NR1 3PN in Kitz's checker and it tells you roughly how long the line is, with a direct estimate of the exchange distance.

Re: High attenuation yet 2km from exchange
Just because your line is newly installed by BT doesn't mean the whole connection back to the exchange is based on new line. You may be struggling because the cable somewhere between you and the exchange is no good. Also, do you have any extension sockets on the line and are you plugged into the master/ test socket??

Re: High attenuation yet 2km from exchange
Doesn't actually indicate that the exchange listed is your actual exchange. There have been instances where the routing is to a more distant exchange due to a lack of available pairs routed to your local exchange.

This particular exchange it's supposedly connected to (when I type the phone number of the line in the exchange which comes up is Norwich City, the only other one near to it is Norwich North) has a capacity of red for Opal new lines. I can't imagine BT having the same problem, and it seems daft that they would connect it up and it have such a high attenuation. It's knocked the download down to around 4Mbit. Upload is 1.3Mbit, so more symmetrical than Virgin Media at least!!!!
The line is in the master socket. To give you an idea, the entire building is wired up for different offices, and this was a new line put in. The other circuit not 3 feet away from it gives 6.5Mbit down and 1Mbit up (ADSL2+ on C+W LLU), so I'm more confused now than I was when this line was put in and activated!
