02 Free sim packages - transfer number in?

Hi there

first time I've ventured out of the cable related forums into the other telco section ... please be gentle with me!

My dad has an old Vodaphone handset (I think it was marketed as something like "justaphone" or something like that, it has a big screen and big buttons, meant for older folks). He's had it a while, so the number is known to quite a lot of his friends and contacts.

He wants to change handsets to something a bit more modern (I suggested the HTC desire like I have, don't think he's ready to go quite so far in a technology jump!). He has my mum's old handset, which is a Motorola W375, which he would like to use. The problem is that it is locked to O2.

He went to visit a local phone shop, who tried to sell him an O2 sim for £10, and told him he's have to change his number. I get the impression that the phone shop guy was trying to use pressure selling on someone who looked a little old and wasn't too hot on technology ... but that is beside the point.

So, options. I thought about getting the handset unlocked so he can put his Vodaphone sim in it, but then looking online it seemed to be a bit of a faff. Perhaps the best option would be to get a free sim (from http://freesim.o2.co.uk/) then transferring his number over via number portability?

So my question is really - is it possible to port a number from Vodaphone PAYG to an O2 freesim?

Thanks in anticipation.

Andy

Yes it's possible and probably the easiest way, just make sure you are happy with the signal 02 provides before you move to 02 or any other provider.

Thanks Snoopz.

v0id - seriously, £10 for a PAYG SIM. Luckily, despite his being not too hot on technology, my dad was a salesman for all of his working life and recognised the high pressure / baffle with b#llshit approach that the guy was spouting for what it was. Shame really, he could probably have upsold to a new phone if he had taken a bit of time, as it was he alienated him and lost a customer for good. My dad is all in favour of supporting local shops, but he won't be ripped off.
