Re: BT Home hub & a phone line extension cable
Personally I would have run Cat5e cable or Cat6 with RJ45s on, put the home hub as close to the NTP (Master socket / Network Termination Point) as possible and run everything from there.
Then I would have replaced the homehub with something better, and if I needed more ports upstairs - thrown in a gigabit switch.
Reasoning?
The cable from the switch (exchange) determines your internet speed, any interference affects the speed drastically, a long extension can make the difference between 6mbit and 2mbit. Ethernet on the other hand is rated for 100m before problems crop up.
The homehub IMO is still unstable enough to be a problem, so I would fit a better router. Then the upstairs system I would service with a gigabit switch if needed since the speed from computer-computer is always going to be faster than computer-internet and copying large files between machines - let's just say you do notice the difference a gigabit connection makes.
