BT Home hub & a phone line extension cable

I am running a 4 core telephone extension lead of about 11mtrs down to my study from our upstairs bedroom where the phone socket is located through the microfilter, for a BT home hub. I have crimped 2 rj11 connectors on, wired both the same at either ends but am getting no dial tone, when connecting a phone to test for connection. Does the BT hub use all 4 wires? Or is it only 2 for data?

Using the laptob with the hub, with the BT supplied (too short) cable works fine and connects to the broadband with no issue. Any help much appreciated.

to the forum. I've shifted your thread into our telco services discussion area and clarified the title a bit, as your issue is really about the physical wiring of the phones in your house rather than a pure networking problem.

Re: BT Home hub & a phone line extension cable

Personally I would have run Cat5e cable or Cat6 with RJ45s on, put the home hub as close to the NTP (Master socket / Network Termination Point) as possible and run everything from there.

Then I would have replaced the homehub with something better, and if I needed more ports upstairs - thrown in a gigabit switch.

Reasoning?

The cable from the switch (exchange) determines your internet speed, any interference affects the speed drastically, a long extension can make the difference between 6mbit and 2mbit. Ethernet on the other hand is rated for 100m before problems crop up.

The homehub IMO is still unstable enough to be a problem, so I would fit a better router. Then the upstairs system I would service with a gigabit switch if needed since the speed from computer-computer is always going to be faster than computer-internet and copying large files between machines - let's just say you do notice the difference a gigabit connection makes.

Can you not plug in the homehub in the bedroom upstairs and connect using wireless?

With regard to the wiring, only two wires are required to rum both voice and adsl. I would suggest you connect one end of your wire to terminals 2+5 onto the frontplate of your master socket then fit a standard pstn extension socket on the other end. Fit your adsl filter to the new socket which will then give you both voice and data in your office.
