21CN to be tested in Swansea

After a successful trial on two small Welsh towns, BT is (at some point over the summer) planning to roll out their 21CN network in Swansea without telling the users. The idea apparently being that the users shouldn't notice anything..

When they get up, try and use the phone and find a big, resounding silence instead of a dial tone?

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

Gonna be a great 21st Century Network isnt it....

Quote:
Although the new gear is theoretically capable of 24Mbit/s, most in the South Wales trials had managed between 8 and 12Mbits/s, in line with the technical limitations of ASDL. Despite this, Beal said small scale HDTV tests had been successful. HDTV could be key to the credibility of BT Vision, which the firm hopes to wholesale to other broadband providers.
So what is this 21CN for? people already claim they can get 20Mb, Virgin can go way higher already.

Maybe BT wholesale should start selling off parts of its network.

I sent the link to a friend who works for BT, he replied.

"The key word is "Hopes" as at the moment they can`t get it to work!!!!
Across the UK we have just taken on and trained over 1500 new recruits."

Yeah, Be* claim they can do this already, so i dont see what the upgrade actually is at all. Dont suppose anyone from BT could explain.

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

The current lines are theoretically capable of 24Mbit/s (within a certain distance) the 21cn is suppose to guarantee 24Mbit/s. And how long is that going to last for.

May as well just lay their own cable network.

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

It's all about getting the IP Core network as close to the customer as possible. Most issues with current cable modems can be attributed to noise on the HFC network.

The 21CN is about cutting down the copper and hops. With the IP core closer to the customer it would make it cheaper in years to come to lay fibre to the home or office.

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

Still seems wrong to me, if they are going to guarentee 24 then what are they going to do when VM decides its time to goto 3 packages, 25, 50 and 100 as they are techially cabled and ready for.

Sounds like it would of been a lot more profitable for them to lay their own cable network.

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

It's more profitable for BT to invest abroad, they will drag their feet here until the Government finally comes up with a big wedge.

Re: 21CN to be tested in Swansea

When they say 'Swansea' I wonder if that also applies to towns about 7 miles outside the city?

I'll monitor this...
