What is this gizmo?
I have here on the desk in front of me a BT Oscillator 87J. A network tech left it here after checking our line and finding nine (count 'em) faults on it, which have been causing appalling crackle and increasingly dodgy broadband for quite some time now (we used to get 1.5Mb, now we are lucky to get more than 128Kb). Getting him out here is a story in itself, I had to fight VM for weeks to get them to agree there was a fault and call in BTW to investigate.
He left it so when he phones from somewhere down the line tomorrow, Mrs T can plug it in and assist with the diagnostics.
What does it do? I hate having gadgets and gizmos in my house that I can't play with.

I have just found a 'BT Tester 310' sitting on the fence post outside. I suspect he didn't intend to leave this one behind! It's a large yellow box inside a waterproof nylon case.

Does it have a display? Im guessing its either an amplifer which a headset plugs into (for listening for the tones generated by the ocsillator, its easier to hear in noisy enviroments than the other type) or if its got a largish display on it its probably the tool for measusing the continuinity of the line (gives them an estimate of how far the cable goes so helps in finding discconected joints.etc)
I'd think he'll be wanting that back somehow.

Yep, it had a large LCD display, and he was most grateful to get it back the next day.

Re: What is this gizmo?
I still have my Tone Generator from when I worked at BT (20 years ago).
