Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
Sky has criticised the BBC’s proposals not to offer a bespoke version of the iPlayer, which the satellite broadcaster says will prevent it from offering the VoD service to its subscribers.

I guess there isn't enough money left to actually pay for such a product.

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
What's this? Sky whingeing about restrictive practices and complaining that a rival broadcaster won't give it access to content on the terms it demands? Truly, Murdoch can't have an ironic bone in his body.

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
So Sky want BBC to pay for changes which mean they can sell me?
When it's available on just about everything else...

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
I still like this from the Interview: BBC iPlayer boss Daniel Danker.
A recent BBC Trust report indicated that the BBC's on-demand content must always be made available within iPlayer and not syndicated, meaning the chances of it coming to Sky appear remote. Side-stepping the issue somewhat, Danker claimed that Sky customers are already accessing iPlayer on other devices, but he also defended iPlayer as a platform.

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
"side stepping" is a little strong I think. He pointed out the BBC's desire to put a "... context and experience around the media itself ...". This may just have been a bit too oblique for the hack at DS to understand (although you would hope they would be employing people who can cut through and translate industry jargon such as this, that being the reason their website is supposed to exist).
Danker is pointing out the need for people to understand who has produced the content they are watching. For the BBC, this means ensuring that all content they deliver as VOD is delivered in BBC iPlayer branding. If Sky gets to do it the way it wants to, then there is no iPlayer branding - just BBC programmes delivered by Sky to a Sky interface on a Sky box. Sky commoditizes the BBC content whilst reinforcing its own brand.
As the guardian of content that is paid for by us, the licence fee payers, the BBC is quite right to ensure that at all times it is very clear when it is BBC content that is being viewed. I don't want Sky using screencaps of BBC programmes surrounded by Sky branding as a means of marketing its services.
It is abundantly clear, if the word on the street is that the iPlayer won't be on Sky 'any time soon', that Sky refuses to budge on this basic issue, despite the fact that the iPlayer exists, with clear iPlayer branding, on IIRC about 40 other devices or services. It's Sky's loss IMO.

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
How odd. If Sky want to offer it just offer it, no need at all to try to rebrand BBC as Sky. Tools.

Re: Sky criticises BBC over iPlayer.
I just posted the link to balance out the argument ( so we get both sides of the story )
