Jeremy Hunt wants "Local TV" to become a reality

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has invited firms interested in running local TV channels in the UK's major cities to register an interest by March 1st.

He wants Ofcom to be handing out licences for these channels by the end of 2012.

Source : BBC News

Community radio has been a huge success, but will local TV be as successful with its more expensive outlay. Will the local news media, who will no doubt be in charge, have the money or be able to produce programmes local viewers want.

We have just had Ofcom allow ITV to merge regions and close newsrooms and this could be the future of local TV news.

Good idea or white elephant ?
