BBC to takeover cost of S4C.

The television licence fee, which funds the BBC, is to be frozen for the next six years at £145.50, it has emerged.

And the BBC will take over the cost of the World Service, currently funded by the Foreign Office, as well as the Welsh language TV channel, S4C.

S4C should always have been funded by the Welsh Office/Welsh assembly and not the DCMS (as it was)...

I totally agree - if it's specifically for the Welsh it should be paid for by the Welsh parliament -why should the rest of us pay for a minority?

Hmm! The government have ring fenced overseas aid and yet the most important 'aid' that the rest of the world reveres and regards as vitally important is the World Service..

Why have you never complained about your licence fee paying for BBC local radio or, for that matter, the BBC Wales Today evening news?

Nothing about the BBC's budget, or the government's budget, is ring-fenced. It's collected from everyone as a licence fee or a tax and then spent wherever it's needed. This is not controversial.

What about BBC Alba - already funded out of the licence fee for the benefit og the three people who watch it.

well thats an easy one, alough theres "BBC Wales Today" theres also "Look East/north/west" etc and the local radio you also get your own region local radio.

For your licence fee (in england) you get bbc1,2,3,4 cbbc cbbies, bbc news etc plus YOUR local radio and YOUR local news service

in wales they get bbc1,2,3,4 cbbc cbbies, bbc news etc plus YOUR local radio and YOUR local news service AND S4C

in scotland its bbc1,2,3,4 cbbc cbbies, bbc news etc plus YOUR local radio and YOUR local news service AND BBC ALBA

so to ensure were all getting the same value then BBC should either close down S4C and BBC ALBA (i dont know if n irland getc its own channel) OR create BBC England that is only broadcast in england.

If the devolved regions (scotland, n irland and wales strange how england is the only one that isnt devolved but thats for another thread) want a service just for them then surly it should bee for the devolved partiments/assemblys to pay for it and not GB as a whole (either via licence fee or general taxation)

Re: BBC to takeover cost of S4C.

Sorry ... are you seriously suggesting there is no cross-subsidy at all between the various English regions at the BBC? Do you really think that the amount of licence fee revenue collected in the BBC's London and the southeast region (population somewhere north of 10 million) is anything like that collected in BBC Northwest (population more like 5 million)?

no im saying that each area gets a roughly equal service (mix of local news/radio etc) sure some areas may get a higher budget then others but the service is generally the same (unless of cause you happen to live on transmission borders and can get several different "local" radio services).

S4C and BBC ALBA on the other hand are an EXTRA services aimed directly at a minority of the UK citizenship (language specific) that 1 part of the UK receives over other parts of the UK.

Re: BBC to takeover cost of S4C.

People in the Scottish and Welsh parts of the country dont watch the channels theres like 3 people and they have to pay for what they dont watch so like people who have analouge pay for bbc 1 , 2 , 3 ,4 cbbc and cbbeebies so they cant watch these digital programs so they should have a monitor for what the usage of the channels are so you dont get charged for what you can't get / won't watch.

Eh?

Are you suggesting the license fee is removed and all BBC TV and radio channels go subscription only?
