Will Apple TV Become iTV?

Quote:
More speculation has surfaced that Apple TV suggesting the next version of the set-top box will run iOS applications, have 720p HD video output, and be renamed iTV.
but i thought that the U.K. television network iTV had copyright on this name
after all, apple do to stop copyright infringements on there products they try to steal someone else trade name.......... the hypocrites

But U.K. television network iTV won't be happy about it.
Quote:
Speaking to Pocket-Lint in an interview, Mike Large, iTV acting group director of communications, said his company values the iTV brand and has "vigorously defended" it in the past. He stopped short of saying iTV would go to court with Apple, but indicated his company plans on being the only firm to use the iTV name.

You might want to wait until Apple actually announce the rumored product before we speculate on legal problems on the name. This could be a complete fabrication or, quite likely, details of an internal project which has a temporary, internal, name. It wouldn't surprise me if they have this name internally and haven't consulted legal issues and trademarks yet. They could do a deal with ITV to use the name in this instance like they did with Cisco for the name 'iOS' a while back...

Re: Will Apple TV Become iTV?

I thought Apple had copyrighted "i" before products current and future (can't right of the right terminology).

But ITV is caps, and has been around longer than Apple used "i". So I doubt iTV would be allowed.

What I would like to know is how BBC got away with "iPlayer"?

Re: Will Apple TV Become iTV?

Remember that ITV is just an acronym for the full name... As far as the trademark as already pointed out the ITV logo isn't anything like a possible iTV that Apple are likely to register...

Yet another non-event on a slow news day

I am not sure they can. After all, we would be legally required to obtain permission to use any word beginning with i.

I know a few years ago Intel were prevented from copyrighting 5, 8 and 6 for the reason they are needed by the public, hence them employing the services of the PR consultant who named Starbucks, to invent the word "Pentium".

I suspect the fact that it's not directly competing with Apple helps (the BBC still sell/rent stuff through itunes).

Re: Will Apple TV Become iTV?

ITV own the (UK) copyright to all ways of typing ITV, including iTV, iTv, etc.

The product is aimless anyways, it takes away a good working product and replaces it with a jailbroken iPod Touch with video out cables and no screen.

True, and I've no doubt that Apple will do one of two things. 1) Rename the device in the UK or 2) come to an arrangement with itv.

It replaces a product that was perfectly capable, yes, but was far too expensive for it's intended market, so didn't sell well. After all, it cost £299 (IIRC). Nearly as much as a PS3 but without the ready supply of games.

You can call the new product a broken ipod touch if you want, but the fact remains that the touch (together with the iphone and ipad) has been very successful, and using ios on any new device will give it access to a huge amount of apps that the Apple TV did not have.
