Plus is the open network so they need to carry more channels (Like Phone the ''Babe'' channels). But some channels goes off air when it rain or Snow.

Virgin take most of their channels from the same satellites used by Sky customers. Rain fade still affects Virgin occasionally even with their 3m dishes.

Re: Why have Sky......
I've been looking at new houses recently and none of them have VM cable provision - one of the developments was upwards of 1800 homes. That's an awful lot of potential customers

Re: Why have Sky......
Sky wanted me to have the dish hooked up to a landline when I gave them a call some time ago and insisted it had to be from BT. I explained I didn't have an active BT line and was then told I had to pay over £100 to BT to get it activated. No way was i going to stump that kind of money to watch Sky TV. As a result I've subscribed to VM and never looked back. No silly up front fees. In fact I had a self install pack so no install fee's. I wouldn't go with Sky at all now. VM are getting HD channels now and I just hope we see Sky Sportd HD soon.

yep, I was with sky for over 8 years as I never lived in a cable area until now and if my broadband fault gets repaired I can see me being a VM customer for many years. I know loads of people that would kill for cable in their area. Only downside for me is the price of adding movies and sports to the TV package, I just dont want to pay that much

Ive never understood that because once you've had it for a year they say a phoneline isn't required

Because despite the natural butt kissing that will happen on this forum given it's a cable focussed one Virgin don't offer the best all round package for all customers, simples.
It's a tad more than double the number of customers by the way. VM had 3,743,200 TV customers as of Q4 2009, Sky had 9.7 million TV customers at the end of Q4 2009. Sky only sell their TV and phone to customers who take their TV service so those stats aren't directly comparable.

Sky have their own phone service now so people can use that now rather than BT, you also have the option now to pay a one off fee so that you do not have to have your box on the telephone line for 12 months if it's a single box installation.
There are also self install deals going around too these days for people with dishes already in place. All in all more choice for the end user and that can only be a good thing.
We have been with Sky for years, no signal issues in bad weather etc and adsl that is maxing out our line at 16Mb (30+ year old copper in this area), my mother has just moved from VM to sky, is saving £25 per month for a near identical package and gets faster ADSL to boot as she is less than 1/4 mile to the exchange.

Re: Why have Sky......
The 36 HIGH DEFINITION channels may have persuaded a few people to have sky.

Absolutely. Sky has always done well out of selling stuff to gullible people who think just because something's a big number, it must be good.

Whereas Virgin re-package some of Sky's channels, and sell them to more gullible people?
