Widescreen settings on a tv when using ntl

Folks, I wonder if anyone can help with this problem?
I have an widescreen Orion TV – 32FKC TV32f26 – which I am trying to set permanently on ‘widescreen (16:9)’. I do not have the original remote control for the set, but I find that both a Phillips and a Bush tv remote work almost all of the options, including the one allowing me to set screen size.
However, when the set is linked up to a digital NTL box, the 16:9 widescreen setting reverts to 4: 3on some channels, like Discovery Civilisation, and has to be reset to widescreen while on that channel, each time, which is a real pain. Other channels remain at the 16:9 setting, it seems. When I flick back the troublesome channels, again, though, the set switches back to 4:3, and I have to change the setting again.
The tv does not seem to accept any input from the buttons on the set itself, aside from on/off.
Any suggestions?

Re: Widescreen settings on a tv when using ntl

Some channels are still broadcast in 4:3 (such as Civilisation) so the STB will show them in the correct aspect ratio.

The same happens if a widescreen channel shows an old TV show, the TV will usually show it correctly as a 4:3 square picture.

You will need to set your TV to 'stretch' those 4:3 channels into Widescreen if you don't want it to change

Re: Widescreen settings on a tv when using ntl

thanks, BenMcr for taking the time to reply. i have a Bush tv which is very similar, and the settings on that seems to automatically adjust for widescreen when it is linked up to the stb (ie everything appears in widescreen without having to press the remote), so i still think it is the actual Orion tv which is causing the problems. i checked again, and the 4:3 ratio on the on screen display is actually "auto" rather that "4:3" (though that is the acutal ratio displayed on dis. civilisation etc). Any futher suggestions most welcome!

Re: Widescreen settings on a tv when using ntl

If the TV is connected VIA Scart and NOT Component. Some times the TV Is controlled By the Equipment with a signal on a Scart Pin disconnecting this pin can stop this signal Over riding the TV aspect ratio
PIN 8 = Status & Aspect Ratio up3) [0-0.4V → off, 5-8V → 16:9, 9.5-12V → on/4:3]

You will lose auto channel change when you turn the box on if this pin is disconnected.

Or you could just turn off the SCART control on the Virgin STB?
