Disconnecting Telewest box and connecting an aerial

I am in a reasonably new build (1996) and when they built the flats each one had telewest box installed instead of a normal aerial connection. On Tuesday there was a message on my TV saying that Virgin had turned off the analogue signal (at that stage I didn't even know I was using them!) I undid the wall connection to find there was another cable unattached behind so went to Maplin and bought a normal aerial socket and plate. I have attached these by securing the wire mesh under the holder and just bringing the copper wire through and securing it under the screw- no mesh is touching the copper so no interference there. I still can't get signal.... well, its very snowy although I get clear sound. Can anyone help (the managing agent says that the aerial is connected to each flat)

Re: Disconnecting Telewest box and connecting an aerial

Welcome to the forum. VM's been turning off all the analogue signals in line with the country going totally digital over the next couple of years.

Without an extrenal (or if you're in a good signal area) and internal antenna you won't be able to get a terrastrial signal. Who's your telephone with? If VM then you can get thier base package for free.

If you want freeview then again you need an antenna or freesat you need a dish (other option is Sky via a dish)

Thanks Kymmy. Our phone is with Talk Talk so no joy there Our managing agent insists that we have an external aerial that is all set up and capable of receiving but we can't seem to get a picture and even when scanning with the freeview box it can't pick anything up. So frustrating...

Re: Disconnecting Telewest box and connecting an aerial

If you had a VM signal via that socket then it's attached to the cable and not an external antenna. You'll probably find the other cable is routed into the bedroom or somewhere where they thought you might want to add a socket later..

Sorry I can't be of more help..

We've tried that socket but that doesn't work either. Hopefully someone on the forum may have experienced something similar? Thanks for your help though Kymmy!

I would have a go at the Managing agent if were you. Get them to come to your flat and show you where this magical external connection is

That's nice of him. No doubt developers done a cheap deal with
the cable operator at build and now the agent is putting the onus on his residents to fix what should be his problem. As I assume this affects all the residents, perhaps you should make pests of yourselves and push to get a proper communal system put in.

Re: Disconnecting Telewest box and connecting an aerial

hi
i think im having a similar problem in my flat. previous owner had virgin media but ive only got my internet and phone with virgin. the aerial socket doesnt seem to work despite the factor saying that work has been done to aerial to make it ready for the digital switchover. is there any chance virgin do something to the aerial when they install their system?
any help would be great
