Re: sky wins 5 of 6 epl football packages

Apparently, Setanta have lost the Monday night slot, which goes back to Sky, what l don't understand is why Sky didn't leave it as it was.

And what is the point of Setanta, just having just 23 games, Exactly, what does Setanta now, and for the next few years, as it is confusing me.

In football they still have FA cup, Home Internationals, SPL as well as extensive coverage of French, German,Portuguese and Dutch domestic stuff. They also have Golf, cricket, boxing and ufc. They'll have no problems filling their schedule without resorting to indoor tiddlywinks or other p*sh that SS often had to resort to a few years ago.

Too me that is like a kick in the goolies, for Setanta, they had big things for the Premier League live game. Bit l think that Ofcom should get involved, as the stranglehold, they have on football, is rediculous.

I am a strong believer, that live games should be spread out to various companies, Channel five supply good footie.

I also think it is wrong that the PL, do it in this manner, and they shoild say, you bid for the first three, and we will split the other games, between Setanta etc.

Re: sky wins 5 of 6 epl football packages

I can't disagree with you Arthur but really those who run the Premier League have a duty to maximise revenue for it's member clubs. They have done so within the framework that allows $ky to have 80% of the live games so they can't really be faulted. It was the much maligned Euro boffs who legislated to break up the $ky monopoly to any extent at all.

As much as you and I dislike it the enormous success of the Premier League is largely due to the money generated by Television, particularly $ky. Channel 5 and the other Free terrestrial channels couldn't possible compete with the big $ky bucks.

$ky now has exactly what it wanted. the Early evening Saturday kick off always lost them money, so they won't be crying about that.

I have to say I didn't realise setanta had 2 of the 6 for 2007-2010. I thought it was 1 of 6 for some reason. I suppose on Sky it is likely to affect setanta's revenue as people are going to be even less inclined to shell out £12.99 for fewer matches plus picture quality that annoys a lot of sky viewers.

It's all well and good Sky bidding for the rights, but that's about 8 or 9 million potential subscribers plus pubs; I can't help thinking if the Premier League awarded the rights to a commercial terrestrial/free-satellite broadcaster, they'd make more money and gain more viewers.

That's only because their dishes aren't properly aligned; I can't understand why to watch it on satellite telly costs more than Freeview.

Re: sky wins 5 of 6 epl football packages

it costs more on sky because freeview only has setanta 1 where as on sky there is about another 8 or 9 channels included in the setanta package

Setanta's picture is bad on cable as well.

That's incorrect. Setanta Sports outputs a woefully poor picture quality on both satellite and Virgin Media, you can have a perfectly alligned dish and it's still bad and just to be clear no it's not the bitrates either, they are very high for an SD channel. I'm just pointing to in this discussion it may well hit setanta because it has been known in the past for Sky subscribers to subscribe to setanta for £12.99, be outraged by the shameful picture, try and cancel to be only told that you have to have a minimum 2 months and write in person to cancel! It's been on Watchdog people are so cheesed off with them. There has even been speculation that setantas costs may go up by quite a bit.

As for premplus, that's interesting but didn't that run at a massive loss?

It did. That was the Saturday evening package that they no longer have so I doubt if they'll be shedding too many tears for it.

It looks like Setanta got that package fairly cheap in comparison to the other packages.

Re: sky wins 5 of 6 epl football packages

This is what l think might happen, Two things, l think that VM might take them over, as don't forget we already get FREE footie etc with them.

OR Sky might come in a take them over, and that would be a feather in there cap, what the problem is, Setanta has tried to take on the big boys and lost.
