Because both Channels 4 and 5 are losing an awful lot of money, and the BBC has so far objected to losing some of the licence fee to channel 4.

Also Channel 4 news could go independent, so the merged group could create a new news and weather base, that will provide Channel 4 news and weather as well providing News on-demand,24 hour news and weather channel and a teletext service.

However for this to work Virgin Media Television would have to sell off there share in the UKTV channels including G.O.L.D,Watch,Dave and Eden unless the BBC sells its share which it probably will, so that means Gold,Watch,Dave,Eden,UKTV people and UKTV Gardens will also be part of the group making the merged Virgin Media TV/Channel 4 group the largest UK broadcaster. It covers most things except sports and movies,although Filmflex covers that too.
