Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

Just went to watch ITV today & its choppy (Pixelated & sound is aweful). Then No picture only sound. BBC works ok. Its a built in unit to my Son 40" TV.

Most days ITV works ok. But I think its the weather? (but today is nice out ie no heavy rain/wind) but TV is not working.

I have Freevie as in www.freeview.co.uk

I thought Digital TV was On or Off (not like old TV with bad pictures & sound). Any ideas if its normal?

Location Swansea.

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

I get dodgy breakups and that kind of thing if the weather is bad.

Admittedly it does have to be very bad here (but then i can see the mast out of my window).

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

How good is your aerial?
Did you have a new "digital" one installed, or using an old one from the good-old analogue days?

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

Can you tell us which transmitter you're pointing your aerial at?

Do a check at Wolfbane and post the name of the transmitter, your distance from it, and the aerial recommendation it gives you (which will be a letter, in the "Gp" column of the results table).

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

You checked the signal levels on those particular channels? Also Yagi aerials can work absolutely fine in low signal areas as long as the cabling is still good, pointed in the right direction and a good height.

Depends on the sensitivity of the tuner too. At a girlfriend's house she had a antenna that was a reasonable height but I was pretty sure water had penetrated the cabling. Motorbikes in the street and cars going past could pixelate some of the weaker channels and they'd mess up in bad weather quite easily. Other channels worked absolutely fine with signal about 80% most of the time. I lived round the corner and someone else in the house used freeview on my PVR. The yagi aerial was about 10ft higher, the cabling was immaculate and signal was 100% on all channels permanently. It pixelated hardly ever. We both lived in very low signal areas and were about 50yards away in a straight line.

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

Do you have any trees in line with the transmitter? A friend has a large tree outside their home and the signal deteriorates during the summer they lose several of the channels despite having a so-called digital aerial.

There is no such thing as a 'digital aerial'. What you get is a Wideband aerial, which is often marketed as a 'digital aerial' so that Joe Public understands that they may need to change their aerial to receive Freeview.

Aerials are grouped into frequency bands, and the aerial you choose must match the frequency band of your local transmitter. Transmitters send their signals in groups of frequencies so that each transmitter does not interfere with any neighbouring transmitters. This forces TV viewers to use an aerial that is able to receive signals only from a particular frequency group, so that you don't pick up stray signals from a different transmitter that might spoil your TV reception.

In order to send both digital and analogue signals from the same transmitter, it has been necessary to force some of the transmitters to do two things that were not intended when they were originally built:

1. Transmit signals outside of their allotted frequency group.
2. Transmit signals at a lower power than the transmitter is capable of.

2/ is necessary because of 1/, in order to continue to prevent one transmitter interfering with another.

The consequences of this are twofold:

1. If your local transmitter has to broadcast outside of its normal frequency group in order to provide digital services, then you require an aerial that can receive signals from more than just one frequency group. This is why some people require a wideband aerial, sometimes marketed as a 'digital aerial' for the sole reason that it is the launch of digital terrestrial TV that has made this necessary.
2. If there is anything at all about your locality or TV set-up that might affect your digital TV reception, then you will probably suffer for it, because digital signals are not currently running at full power. They cannot do so until after analogue switch-off is complete for your region (in some cases, not until neighbouring regions are complete as well) so as not to interfere with signals on other transmitters.

To cut a long story short, many of these problems will go away by themselves ... eventually ... however in the meantime you need to do everything you can to ensure your aerial has sufficient gain for the signal strength of your local transmitter, and to ensure your own home set-up is as sound as possible.

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

Personally I think it's a bit of an urban myth that yagis won't work well for digital. Unless they are out of group (see above) or the cable has been compromised or they are at a low height the odds should be reasonable.

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

At the moment my aerial is connected through chocolate block (connector block) to 3 outputs and one of the connections seems worse than the others. This maybe because it is an old haupgage card on my pc. Is it worth putting on RFconnectors and using a splitter or just go ahead and get a new aerial fitted? The old one is 20 years old

I've edited your attachment to remove your postcode.

If you're using Carmel, then you need an extra-beefy aerial with added amplification in order to get digital TV. It may be that the aerial you have had for years was sufficient for analogue, but it may now not be high-gain enough for digital.

It certainly is going to be the right group for digital anyway, the results don't say you need wideband. But it may be worthwhile taking a snap of the aerial and showing it to them down at a local TV shop - they should be able to say whether it is likely to be the right sort for where you are.

Re: Freeview TV (ITV Issue)

Just phoned Freeview site (used a NON 0870 Number). Very friendly & helpfull guy.

We worked out that I am on Kilvey Hill (looked at BBC setting & what Ch it is on). Then he said I dont need the "Digital Ariel" (ie Wideband) as Kilvey was ok with mine. The ITV/Sky News was on the same Channel Cluster & now I notice I'm missing 20+ channels. (after a Re-Scan)

He said it will be a wire/Conector issue & no need to buy any new stuff yet just check wires & such. So will have to get someone up loft & look at wire.

I was impressed with the FREE help on Freeview Call.
