DVB-T update kills 250,000 boxes

http://www.freeview.co.uk/features/transmission

Set- top boxes
Daewoo DS608P
Labgear DTT100
Triax DVB 2000T
Portland DP100
Combined set-top box and video recorder

Daewoo SV900
Bush IDVCR01

If you have one of these boxes, it will become unusable when the channels are refreshed, at the moment, it can continue to operate on the existing stored channels, but it will lose all channels if rescanned.

An apology and advice on buying your next box, no compensation.

This is the Double standard freeview operators have, its fine for Top up TV to force a Freeview box upgrade, when SKY wanted to force Freeview users to upgrade their boxes to get more channels, o no thats was not allowed to happen, but its fine to force an upgrade on these users .. Now... wonder full...

Its because you can get a freeview box for below £20 and in some cases around £10, so they feel the is no need to swap boxes or do anything else.

Re: DVB-T update kills 250,000 boxes

Looking at the wording it seems it's the early adopters (who probably paid a premium for the boxes rather than £10 or £20) that got burnt by this.

But those boxes are now in finance / technology terms fully depreciated assets and their replacement cost is £10 or £20.
Sky have a similar problem in that the legacy boxes do not have enough RAM to increase the size of the EPG. They could blow those boxes up and say enough already, get a replacement box or as they have chosen keep them in service and max out the size of the EPG. Sky has an incentive to keep them in service, the subscription revenue. OverAirDTB does not have that incentive.

How long have you had this box? What did you pay for it new?

Re: DVB-T update kills 250,000 boxes

It's not so much the replacement cost - £15 isn't much, but that doesn't change the fact it cost £80 to start with.

They have just gone the same route as PCs and Flat Screen TVs as regards prices.

and they have had, what 4 years of TV from it? So 20 a year or less than 2 quid a month.
If this happened to me it would be more about the hassle of going and getting the new box than the 15 quid cost.

Re: DVB-T update kills 250,000 boxes

I think the least the manufacturers should do is give people a money off voucher. Who on earth would manufacture a piece of kit these days with absolutely no room for expansion, especially in an ever-changing field like digital TV. I would boycott these joker' products and teach them a lesson! Might teach them to buy the 10p chip instead of the 8p chip in future!

The manufacturer made something that was capable of coping with the expansion for 4 years. That is a pretty long time in the space of TV technology at the moment. CRTs were still widely available back then. Perhaps the manufactures shoudl be giving vouchers for those joker products as they cannot display 720p.
